Arrangements are entrusted to Horizon Funeral Home at 701 Elm Ave, Dalhart, Texas, 79022. Wilma Jean Jones Rose was born in Dalhart and lived most of her life in the Texas Panhandle. Wilma is survived by her husband, Chester, of Dalhart; daughter and stepchildren Rena Sawyer and husband Jeff of Memphis, TN, Gary L. Rose and his wife Susan of Abilene, Tammie K. Rose of Midland, and Whitney Rose Defries and her husband Jerry of Sunray. Wilma's grandchildren and their families, who called her Mimi, are Chelsea Fly and her husband Stephen of Memphis, TN, Jessica Snyder of Memphis, TN, Misty Burton of Lubbock, TX, Russell Rose of Abilene, Kaylynn Rose of Abilene, Hayden Defries of Sunray, Alex Klok and her husband Colin of Madison, WI, and Aidan Sawyer of Nagoya, Japan. Great-grandchildren are Landon Rose, Anna Katherine Snyder, who Mimi often called AK, Eloise Frances Klok, best known to Mimi as Little Nugget, Jeffery, Jodi Palacios, Jordan Palacios and Aubrey Brewster. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ivan and Gladys Jones of Hartley, Texas; one daughter, Tracey Janene Runner, and one grandchild, Katanya A. Rose. Wilma leaves behind a host of friends and a legacy of giving of herself to the Dalhart community. She also leaves behind baby quilts, afghans, sweaters, and beautifully embroidered calendars that she and Chester gave to dozens of family and friends every Christmas. As a volunteer for the Pink Ladies Auxiliary for over 30 years, she created countless stuffed animals and pillows which were sold at the nursing home gift shop to fund the daily activities she and her friends organized. She bought many of the soft dolls and animals herself, to gift to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, in addition to the ones she made just for them. She hosted hundreds of Bingo days, birthday celebrations, crafts projects over her years of service. Even though she couldn't carry a tune in a bucket (according to her), she and Chester and their friends organized Sing-Alongs every Tuesday and worship services each Sunday for the nursing home residents. Those who knew her best knew that she could sing just fine, with a deep contralto that only someone right beside her could hear. She loved and served her church tirelessly, even when she was convalescing after a spinal fracture in 2019 she volunteered with the WMU at First Baptist Church and corresponded with dozens of missionary families around the world, keeping up-to-date news for each family on the Prayer Chain. There wasn't a day that she wouldn't receive calls and emails requesting prayers or sharing news for the Prayer Chain. She loved collecting the children's penny offerings every year at Vacation Bible School and kept up with scores of children who attended. Wednesday nights would find Chester and Wilma taking care of the meal tickets for dinner before Prayer Meeting. If she couldn't attend church services or Prayer Meetings, she tuned in with Zoom calls or watched the Youtube channel for services. She helped organize meals for bereaved families and potlucks and JOY meetings. Wilma and Chester drove friends to doctors appointments and looked after the needs of their friends whenever they were called on. Wilma took tender care of their aged parents, aunts and uncles, and beloved sister-in-law Doris. She loved having the grandchildren come and spend time with them each summer and sent children and grandchildren home with countless jars of jellies and jams. The cookie jar was never empty, either. They loved going to Hayden's ball games and school programs in nearby Sunray and enjoyed making yearly visits to grandchildren who lived farther away for as long as they were able to travel. Wilma and Chester volunteered with the Hosts program at Dalhart Elementary from 1993 to 2009; the boys and girls they read with each week became permanent members of their personal prayer list. And - well, she'd probably rather we didn't go on any more about all the things she'd done over the years. She always preferred to serve in whatever way she could and didn't care for recognition. Even when she and Chester were honored as Volunteers of the Year, and she later was named one of the Women of the Year for her service, she was embarrassed about all the fuss. Wilma was an artist with charcoal pencil, pastels, ink, and oils. Her favorite subjects were her beloved southwest vistas and its residents. She also was an avid needleworker who sewed, quilted, and knitted. She collected southwest art, and loved music, horseback riding, and traveling all over the US with her beloved Chet. Wilma worked as a paralegal assistant until she retired and kept her membership and certification as a Legal Assistant and Notary Public until just a few years ago. She loved estate law and continued to serve with bookkeeping and estate management for several local ranchers and businesspeople long after her retirement. She read avidly and wrote essays, and as the daughter of pioneers to this region, collected and shared family memories and early panhandle history. In her office today are stacks and stacks of emails she printed and saved from each of her loved ones, clippings, and photos she printed for their scrapbooks. There are photos of the people they love covering the walls of their home. Mostly, she loved people fiercely, and loved her Lord even more fiercely.
