Dalhart Funeral Home Acquires

Horizon Funeral Home

All services provided by Horizon Funeral Home will now be consolidated with Dalhart Funeral Home under one locally owned roof at:

Dalhart Funeral Home & Cremation Services

424 Rock Island Ave., Dalhart, Texas

Dalhart Funeral Home & Cremation Services is honored to announce the acquisition of Horizon Funeral Home, effective November 20, 2025. After years under corporate operation based in Houston, Horizon is now returning to full local ownership, led by funeral director and embalmer Luis Mendoza, owner of Dalhart Funeral Home.

This transition is especially meaningful for Dalhart, where families value local businesses and longstanding relationships. Horizon Funeral Home was originally owned and operated by beloved longtime resident Phillip Hass, who served the community with dedication until his passing in late 2020. The original Hass Funeral Home building—now home to Dalhart Funeral Home—holds a special place in Dalhart’s history, and this move marks a return to those community roots.

More about the acquisition of Horizon Funeral Home

Mendoza previously managed Horizon before opening Dalhart Funeral Home in 2024.
“When I saw the direction Horizon was moving, I approached the company about purchasing it, but the timing wasn’t right. Looking back, I can see that God was opening other doors, and that’s how Dalhart Funeral Home was born. My calling has always been to ensure families receive the level of service, dignity, and professionalism they deserve,” Mendoza shared.

“In our first year, we cared for more than 80% of Dalhart families, and that trust is something I never take for granted.”

Originally from Plainview, Texas, Mendoza has served families across the Western Texas Panhandle for nearly two decades. “The Panhandle is home. I love the people and their hospitality — and I think they like me,” he added with a smile.

  • What Does This Mean For You

    What Families Can Expect

The return of Horizon to local ownership marks a renewed chapter for funeral care in Dalhart. Families will experience:

  • A stable, consistent team without corporate turnover
  • A commitment to putting people first — not numbers

  • Mendoza believes every life has a story worth honoring.

“All of us have a unique story while we’re alive, so why should that change once we’re gone?” he said. “I don’t like cookie-cutter funerals. I will do just about anything to make sure we tell your loved one’s story.”

“Dalhart deserves a funeral home that isn’t answering to a boardroom in Houston,” Mendoza added. “It deserves a home that answers to this community. Horizon’s legacy will live on through us. One roof. One mission. One heart.”
