Vernon "Paul" Chance, 90, died Tuesday, April 25, 2017 in Dalhart, Texas. Graveside services were held at 2pm Friday in Borger at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Pastor Conny Moore of Bunavista Baptist Church officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Horizon Funeral Home of Dalhart. A life well lived. Vernon "Paul" Chance was born in Bartlesville, OK on March 4, 1927. He grew up in Oklahoma, and after graduating high school went to the Navy and served his country in World War II. Upon returning home from the service, he married Violet Rae Madding on May 1, 1948. They made their main home in the Phillips and Borger area for over 50 years before moving to Dalhart in 2016. Paul was a mechanic in the oil industry for Phillips Petroleum, where he retired after 30 years. He loved going to work and shared many stories of his days there, friends he made and jokes they would pull on one another. Paul was a loving, caring, giving person who was loved by all who knew him, a true friend, a loving father and grandfather and most of all devoted husband of 69 years. Paul was an avid fisherman, hunter and golfer, having several hole-in-one awards from the golf course, and so many cherished memories from those times! He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Thurman Allen Chance, sisters-in-law, Audra Trull and Berenice Wooden, and brothers-in-law, Leon Madding and W.W. "Junior" Madding. Paul is survived by his wife, Violet, and daughter Paulette Carroll. His grandchildren, Lori (Stephen) Davis and daughter Haley (Jenaro) Hernandez; Johnny (Kayla) Carroll and daughter Mady; Wayne (Sierra) Carroll and daughters Allie and Emersen; Dean Carroll and son Owen; and Casey (Natasha) Carroll and daughter Nylah. His sisters-in-law, Fatonia "Tona" Venee Herndon, Janell Juanita Binion and Faye Chance Mitchell, as well as brother-in-law Joe Trull, several nieces and nephews.
