Sylvia "Grace" Lewis, was born February 9, 1924 at her daddys homestead at Sedan NM. She was the third child born to William Russell (Shorty) and Zorah Dee (Raper) Lewis. After selling their homestead, they moved to Ft. Sumner, NM where her dad worked for the Western Sand & Gravel Co. At age 4, they moved to Tascosa, TX in probably the first "motor home" constructed by her dad on a Model T truck frame. She remembered looking at the horizon and thinking they were about to fall off the edge of the earth. Her sister, Mary and brother, Jesse started school at the little one room school at Tascosa now Boys Ranch.
Grace started school at Channing, TX and graduated Valedictorian of the class of 1941. After graduation, she went to Amarillo Business School. She lived in Amarillo with a family and took care of their children for her room and board. She would ride the train from Amarillo to Channing and back to go home and see family. After she graduated from business school she worked at the rationing office in Dalhart during WWII. She boarded at a rooming house belonging to her future sister-in-law.
On November 9, 1946, she married Lawrence Lyles at Channing, TX at their rehearsal. She always said she thought he might get cold feet. Their first home was on the Culbertson Ranch at Bueyeros, NM. During the early part of their marriage they worked on several ranches in the Texas Panhandle and New Mexico. In being a cowboys wife, she was always a helper in whatever Lawrence had going on in a cowboys life. She cooked many meals for cowboys and has been known to have been bragged about by many cowboy and family for her biscuits, coconut cream pie, and sweet tea.
In May of 1959, their only child, a daughter, Linda, was born. They lived on the Dodson ranch north of Dalhart. After moving to town, they made their home in Dalhart. She worked for Watkins Packing Co. for many years. In 1969, she went to work for Triangle Grocery in Dalhart. It was owned by her nephew, Warren Teston and Bob Vogle. She continued to work for Warren when he bought into the Jack & Jill franchise until her retirement in 1984.
She has always been active in First Baptist Church since moving to Dalhart in 1945. She taught Intermediate Training Union for years and was also a Sunday School teacher for Adult Women. She was very active in Womens Mission Union and Vacation Bible School after her retirement.
She was a mentor in the Elementary School Reading Program, HOSTS.
She has been a resident of Coon Memorial Nursing Home since 2017. She was very active in all activities. If she wasnt in her room, you could find her either walking or playing SkipBo.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Lyles; her parents, Shorty & Zorah Lewis; her sister and brother-in-law, Mary & Cleo Ledbetter; her brother and sister-in-law, Jesse and Dorothy Lewis.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Linda and Marion Turner; a grandson, Jay Turner and girlfriend, Hannah DeVoss; granddaughter and husband, Audra and Jason Wilshire; and one great-granddaughter, Cazelynne Grace Turner.
Anyone that knew Grace, knew she loved the Lord with all her heart, soul, and mind. She was obedient to his call and relied on him in every decision she made in life. In her words, "To God be the Glory!"
