Sandra Kay Martin Slaughter, 59, died Tuesday, December 27, 2022, in Dalhart, TX taking pancreatic cancer down with her. She perished in her home with her family and loyal dog Maggie at her side. Sandy was born in Iowa City, IA, on May 14th, 1963. On June 9th, 1969, Sandy was adopted by Bill and Kattie Martin of Lehigh, IA. Sandy completed their family and gave two brothers a baby sister to dote on. In the fall of 1972, the Martins moved south to Dalhart, TX. After graduating from Dalhart High School in 1981, Sandy earned a degree in fun and mischief. She surpassed many snags and setbacks before settling into the role of steady-going grandma. Although she may have been considered a "wild one" in her younger years, she accumulated priceless lessons and worthwhile stories. On May 4, 1998, Sandy (finally) married John Slaughter, her long-time, steadfast companion, and partner in crime. Most will remember Sandy from the umpteen years she worked at Sands, K-Bobs, and Bar-H. Sandy adored waiting on her favorite locals and travelers alike. She was always eager to hear native news or another story from folks "just passing through". For the last few years, Sandy worked security at Hilmar Cheese. There she continued to meet and chat with new people every day. If you wanted to catch her ear on a busy shift or at the grocery store, all youd need to say was "How Bout Them, Cowboys?". During their downtime (if The Boys werent playing), Sandy, John, and their dog Maggie enjoyed traveling to wherever they felt like going that weekend. When the road wasnt calling, John and Sandy spent time spoiling their grandchildren and teaching them creative ways to annoy their parents. Sandy leaves behind her devoted husband, John C. Slaughter, of Dalhart, TX; daughter and son-in-law, Hope and Chris Bell of Dalhart, TX; daughter and son-in-law, April and Matt Aragon of Borger, TX; five grandchildren: Justin, Liberty, Giana, Emberleigh, and Avacyn; brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Karen Martin; brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Sandee Martin; a host of beloved nieces and nephews; and countless cherished friends. Sandy is preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Kattie Martin; son, Brent Michael; and father-in-law, Richard Slaughter. The family will hold a Celebration of Life on January 21, 2023. Event details to be posted on Facebook. The family would also like to thank the excellent hospice nurses for all their work during our difficult times.
