Rufus Phelps was born on April 4, 1937 to Bill and Lillian (Hamilton) Phelps in Mercury, TX. He grew up in Arlington, TX until his family moved to Midland, TX then Farmington, NM and then on to Albuquerque where Rufus graduated from Valley High School.
Rufus and Eulene Brown were married December 27, 1958 and soon after he was drafted in the army in 1961 and remained there until 1968. Rufus was an outside lineman in the military helping to run electrical lines on the island of Okinawa. As a result of his service, he was a very proud American that respected the flag and thanked those who he knew were veterans or currently serving. Rufus spent over 45 years as a carpenter in Dalhart, TX after leaving the army. He built numerous homes, (too many to remember he once said), as well as remodeling several homes and businesses. His excellent craftsmanship took him to New Mexico and Oklahoma. A sub-contractor was once quoted as saying "Im not sure a tornado can take down a home that Rufus built"! In a little bit of his free time Rufus picked up leather working and built several pieces for his friends. Rufus enjoyed studying and reading history, especially military history. He enjoyed western movies and hunting and most certainly would be packing a Winchester on those hunts. He worked right up until "slowing down" about a year ago. Rufus loved his Savior and he and Eulene attended the First Baptist Church where they were active members of their Sunday school class.
