Robert Sams, 88 died on Saturday, November 26th at his home in Amarillo, Texas. Funeral services were held at Hollywood Road Community Church 9711 Hollywood Road, Amarillo Texas at 4 PM on Tuesday, November 29, 2011Graveside services and Entombment were in Alva Municipal Cemetery, Alva Oklahoma.Robert (Bob) Sams was born on Saturday, March 4th, 1923 in Alva OK to E.I. and Florence (Clampitt) Sams. On Thursday, December 31, 1942 he married Jeanette (Dixon) Wade in Alva, Oklahoma. Robert was raised in Alva and graduated from Alva Highschool in 1941. Robert joined the Navy in December 1941. He was a gunner's mate on 2 destroyers, first destroyer was the U.S.S. Gwin DD 433 5 battlestars. It was sunk July13, 1943 by a torpedo in 15 seconds. The second destroyer U.S.S Longshaw DD 559 earned 9 battle stars. Sunk at Okinawa May 18, 1945. Robert was wounded and received a Purple Heart Award. As a partner at Alva Monument Works, he returned to work from 1947 to 1953. After he sold his monument service they moved to Kansas City where he drove a truck for Foremost daries until retiring in 1975. He was an avid Sportsman nd member of the Hollywood Road Community Church, Anarillo, TX.Bob is survived by 4 daughters: Kandy Meehan-Gibson and her husband Tom of Leawood, KS and Wanda Geis of Overland Park KS, Judy Huckabee and her husband Jim of Amarillo, TX and Patti Moran and her husband Patrick of Spring Hill KS, 1 Son: Randy Sams and his wife Sherri of Prairie Village KS. 9 Grandchildren: David Milliren and wife Angie, Kenna Sluder and husband Josh, Allison Legnon and husband Darron, Tom Burns, Ryan Burns, Caitlin Meehan and Fiancee' Brad Coover,, Carrie Meehan, Justin and Amanda Sams. 6 Great-Grandchildren: Davis, Austin and Clayton Sluder. Dominic Milliren, Karlee Legnon and Damian Hunt.
