Robert Les Barber, 71 of Dalhart, passed away on July 28, 2023. No service will be held at this time. Cremation arrangements are entrusted to Horizon Funeral Home.
Robert was born on February 25, 1952 to Robert Littleton and Lillian (Venable) Barber in Friona, TX. He attended TSTI in Amarillo and went on to open his own saddle shop, Barbers Spit and Whittle Saddlery, in Muleshoe, TX. Robert married the love of his life, Barbara Ann Lambert, on April 4, 1974.
Robert taught his daughter, Amy Shay, almost everything she knows, except how to cook! Everything from tying her shoes to driving a truck. He would hold a .22 on his knee and have her shoot cans at the age of 4; by the age of 8 she was driving and was probably the only little girl in the 4th grade that could change the oil in a pickup. She would always joke that "Daddy wanted a boy but got her instead." But truth be told, he just wanted to make sure she could take care of herself. He taught her how to ride a horse and rope. Many times, he would say she was "the best help" but he made her that way." Robert didnt tolerate laziness but had patience by the truck load. It was impossible to ask him a dumb question; he always answered in a serious but kind way. One of Amys favorite memories was when she was a little girl, he taught her to waltz by standing atop his feet. She also cherished the time she spent in his saddle shop and to keep her occupied, he would have her work on different leather projects.
Les was blessed with women who thought the world of him and loved him dearly. His wife of 49 years, Barbara, his only daughter, Amy Shay, his only granddaughter, Chelsie Marie, who he called, "Tumbleweed" or "TW" and 3 great granddaughters, Averie, Sophie and Emilie. It wasnt hard for Les to have all these ladies wrapped around his finger from the very beginning. His granddaughters knew him as "Pa, he loved spending time outdoors with his granddaughters and teaching them to be ornery and pull pranks." You wouldnt hardly see "Pa" without one of these women beside him.
Les had one grandson-in-law, Anthony Buck, who he was proud of and loved him as his own. Anthony wanted to get his CDL and Les took him to Dumas and let him use the semi he was driving to take the test. When his grandkids, Chelsie (Tumbleweed) and Augustus (Gus) were little, he would ride his bicycle with them on the back to McDonalds, which was miles down the road because they wanted to ride a bike and not go in the pickup. He spent time making them things like welding sprinkler pipe to making them a club house. He made a swing out of a 55-gallon barrel and would make trip after trip from the house with a 5-gallon bucket of warm water to fill it up and add bubbles and swing them for hours. He would pull them around for hours in a box behind the riding mower. Les would fill up the bucket on his tractor with water and let his granddaughters play in it. As Tumbleweed got older, he taught her to drive in a standard by starting her off on a hill which made her cry because cars behind her were honking. But Les wanted his girls to learn. When the grandkids would stay the night, Pa would lay down with them and tell them "Ghost stories" about Farmer Jones. Pa would always make up a bedtime story and they would all just giggle.
One thing that Averie and Sophie want to share was that Pa was the best, he loved everyone and he would always spoil them. Emilie says Pa always called her his "Little Buddy" and would take her to Dollar General to buy her something. Tumbleweeds favorite memory of him was hearing him tell stories of when he was younger, and they all loved hearing his stories of the good ole days.
To know Les was to love him and have nothing but respect for him. He would give anyone a helping hand at any moment. His laugh was contagious to anyone around. To say that he will be missed, doesnt even come close. Les truly touched everyones lives that he knew.
