Ray Allison Snead, Jr., passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, April 22, 2014.Services were held Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 10:00 am at St. James Episcopal Church, Officiating was The Reverand Phil Ray, Pastor of St James Episcopal Church, in Dalhart, Texas, Internment at Memorial Park Cemetery , Arrangments held by Horizon Funeral Home in Dalhart, Texas.Ray was born February 23, 1929 in Dallas, Texas to Hazel and Ray Snead. He graduated from Amarillo High School in 1947 and attended Tarleton State and West Texas State. On August 10, 1949 Ray married Claire Windsor and they lived at Folsom, NM before moving to Amarillo and eventually making their home in Dalhart where he farmed and ranched for many years. He attended St. James Episcopal Church.Ray served his community well through several endeavors. He served on the boards of St. James Episcopal Church, Diocese of Northwest Texas, First National bank of Amarillo, Texas Cattle Feeders, XIT Rodeo and Reunion, Dalhart Independent School District, Amarillo Area Foundation and numerous other boards. He received the Foy Proctor Memorial Cowmans Award and Dallam/Hartley county Conservationist of the Year.Ray is preceded in death by his parents Hazel Young Snead and Ray Allison Snead Sr., a brother Joe Young Snead and two grandsons Ray Allison Snead, IV and Johnathan Windsor Snead. He is survived by his wife Claire Windsor Snead, his four children Cathryn Snead Brunner and husband Robin, Susan Snead Murray and husband Scott, Ray Allison Snead, III and wife Marsha, William Windsor Snead and wife Valerie. Left with great memories of their grandfather are fifteen grandchildren Rebecca Snead Lackie and husband Jeff, Rachel Snead Hunter and husband Craig, Sarah Snead Ralston and husband Wes, Cathryn Higgins Dail and husband Les, Christen Higgins Parker and husband Kevin, Mark Goodwin Murray and wife Tara, William Devereux Brunner and wife Claire, James Tyler Higgins, Ross Windsor Brunner and wife Lacey, Claire Allison Brunner, William Windsor Snead, Jr. and wife Kate, Benjamin Ray Snead, Robert Snead Brunner, Lucas Andrew Snead and Madison Elizabeth Murray. Also left to cherish his memory are eighteen great-grandchildren, dear friend Judy Sims, brother Robert Garland Snead and his wife Ruth, his sister in-law Jo Winstead Snead, sister in-law Deanie Windsor Burress and many nieces and nephews.In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to St. James Episcopal Church in Rays memory or a charity of your choice.
