Phil Holmes, 84, died Wednesday, December 17, 2014 in Dalhart, Texas.Funeral Services were held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at St. James Episcopal Church with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery.John Philip Holmes, Jr. was born Nov. 23, 1930, in Atlanta, Georgia, to John Philip Sr. and Billie Bess Holmes. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1952, and soon thereafter moved to Dalhart, where he owned the Phil Holmes Insurance Agency. Phil was introduced to golf at age 9, which started a lifelong obsession with the game. He quickly became a standout junior player in the Atlanta area, and starred on the Georgia golf team. He won the Dalhart Country Club championship numerous times over the years, including at age 65 with a final-round score of 65. He was a longtime member of the Dalhart Lions Club. He also served as treasurer of St. James Episcopal Church for 35 years. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Virginia Buettner Holmes, and is survived by his wife, Carol Holmes; a son, John Philip Holmes III and his wife Kay; a daughter, Carey Nel, and her husband Sean; bonus children Julie Shedd, Donnie and wife Kim Wilburn-Gerber, Billy and wife Carol Pipes-Gerber, Gina Gerber-Hill, Tish Gerber-Cordova and husband Archie; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
