Peggy Jean Byrd, 72, passed away in her Dalhart home surrounded by loved ones on Friday, May 8, 2020.
Peggy was born Saturday, September 20, 1947 in Wheeler, Texas to Gladys Mozelle (Williams) and Walter Clifford Calcote. Peggy grew up in Colorado many years then she and her family moved to Conlen, TX where she graduated from Stratford High School. While growing up she loved singing, playing guitar, and participating in basketball. She later obtained her pilots license and became a flight instructor for Ingram Flying Service. Somewhere along the way she fell in love with the sport of bowling and loved all the travel, friends, fun and winning that came with it.
Peggy was well known for her cooking, so she turned it into a business. She ran the Lyn Bragg Truck Stop and then ventured out to open Peggys Place. Peggys Place was where many locals and travelers would stop in to enjoy a cup of coffee or a meal with family and friends. She later turned in her spatula and entrepreneurship to begin her 19-year career with the TDCJ, where she retired in October 2019. Peggy loved her family, but she especially enjoyed being a grandma and great grandma.
Peggy is survived by her daughter Kiki and husband Troy Ralston of Dalhart, Texas, her son Shawn Byrd and wife Dorothy of Pampa, Texas, a brother, Chester Calcote and wife Maureen, eight grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Mozelle and Clifford Calcote.
