Norwood "Rock" Smith, Jr., 66, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 10, 2018 in Borger, Texas. Dalhart- Viewing was held on Monday, September 17, 2018 at Horizon Funeral Home, Dalhart, TX ~ Arrangements provided by Horizon Funeral Home, Dalhart, TX. Funeral Service were held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, September 22, 2018 at the Anthony Funeral Home Chapel, 135 S. 16th, West Memphis, AR 72301 with burial did follow in the Paradise Gardens Cemetery, Edmondson, AR. Officiating by Rev. Frederick Anthony, Old St. Paul Church, West Memphis, AR. Norwood "Rock" Smith, Jr. was born January 15, 1952 in James Mill, AR to Norwood, Sr. & Molly Mae Alice (Macklin) Smith. Rock was the next to the eldest in the family of eight close knit siblings, when it was often said, "there goes that Smith bunch", because when you saw on of them you saw them all. Rock attended elementary and high school at J.S. Phelix. He attended college at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, and later served in the U.S. Army. Rock began his career with the railroad as a brakeman and conductor, relocating to Dalhart, TX in the mid-80's. He accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior at an early age and reaffirmed his faith by baptism under the leadership of the late Rev. F.L. Sledge, pastor of Antioch Baptist Church of Dalhart, TX. Rock, being a "live in the moment" person, was a traveler always "on the go", keeping in touch with family and friends near and far. On Monday, September 10, 2018 Rock transitioned from this life to final rest. Rock leaves to cherish his memory, a devoted wife, Glenda Jean Smith, a daughter (whom he helped in raising) LaKeysha Jordon Turner (LeRoy) of Dalhart, TX., A son, Terrance Smith of Pine Bluff, AR, Uncles Walter "Cal" Smith (Emma) of Milwaukee, WI and Albert Smith (Rosemary) of Jericho, AR., Aunts Lartheree Pickens of East St. Louis, IL., and Evelyn Brown Mackey of West Memphis, Ar. Rock's surviving siblings are: Brothers Clement Newton, Sr. of Memphis, TX, Arthur Smith of Sunset, AR, Sammy Smith (Alitisia) of Columbus, MS and Franklin Smith of Sunset, AR. Sisters Helen Burns of Pine Bluff, AR, Edna Clemons (Neely) of Chicago, IL, Evelyn Perkins (Kenneth) of Memphis, TN, Ora Smith of Buffalo, NY, Dorothy Seymore, Helen Johnson & Lori Dixon all of Marion, AR., Mary Dixon & Lisa Dixon of New Albany, IN. Grandchildren Randon Turner and Keira Turner of Dalhart, TX. "Uncle Jr", as he was affectionately called will be greatly missed by his nieces and nephews as well as, the great nieces and nephews, hosts of cousins, extended family and friends to remember his life. Rock is preceded in death by his parents, Norwood, Sr. & Molly Macklin Smith, as well as second mother, Lucille (Dixon) Smith, Brother Earl Dixon and Sister Erma Cohens.
