Merten Matthew Schmidt, 89, died Wednesday, February 18, 2015 in Dalhart, Texas. Services were held at 10:00 am on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at First Baptist Church, under the care of Horizon Funeral Home Cremation, Memorial and Funeral Service. Merten was born September 30, 1925 in Thomas, OK to Leopold J. Schmidt Sr. and Mary Francis Laughlin Schmidt. He graduated from Butler High School and immediately joined the Air Force. Mertens proudest moment was when he received his wings. He flew as wingman for his commander. After leaving the servicehe came to Dalhart to farm with his father. Merten remained in the Air Force Reserves for 25 years and retiredas a Major. He never lost his love of flying.Merten had a passion for flying, farming, fishing, family, dominos and chocolate cake. He always had a good story and could make anyone laugh. He loved life and lived it to the fullest. Merten will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew him.Merten is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Jodie Schmidt of Dalhart, TX. , son - Kelly Schmidt and his wife Shannon of Amarillo, TX., daughters - Ellen Kyle and husband Terry of Dumas, TX., Gwenfred Millard and husband Harry of Evans, GA., Stacey Schmidt of Dalhart, TX., Katherine Huston of Dumas, TX. grandchildren - Kalise Schmidt and Jordan Medford of Dalhart, TX., Scott Rutlage, Dylan Garza, Carolyn and Ryan Ferguson of Amarillo, TX., Carrie and Arend Gressley of Claude, TX. Great Grandchildren: Cooper Garza, Pearson and Brooklyn Ferguson of Amarillo, TX and Norah Gressley of Claude, TX.Merten was preceded in death by his parents, a brother L.J. and a sister, Carolyn Rice and grandchildren -Spencer Medford, Christian Garza, Great - Grandchildren: Addilynn Medford, Spencer Grayson Medford and Annistynn Medford.
