Marvin Schmidt was born January 11, 1931 to William and Carrie (Nightingale) Schmidt in a small farmhouse near Verden, OK. He was the seventh in a family of thirteen children. At the age of 91, he crossed Jordan suddenly on October 8, 2022, with his loving granddaughter nurse., Lecretia at his side.
Dad grew up with his family at Verden, OK. When he was six his mother passed away. His father married Elvina Schmidt five years later. He received his formal education at Sandlin School near Verden. At the age of 13, he gave his heart to the Lord and was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, at Chickasha, OK, by Minister Ed Unruh on December 24, 1944. When he was 14, he moved with his family to Burns, KS.
Marvin and Syliva met at a wedding in Burns, KS. They were married on February 1, 1953, by her uncle Minister George Nichols after a two-week engagement. Dad had been called to 1-W service and the next day they left for Larned, KS. This is where they spent the first two years of their married life, after which they moved to Fairview, OK. God blessed them with eight children over the span of twenty-two years.
In December of 1974, they moved to the Texline area and became charter members of the Texline Mennonite Church. Dad was a lover of song. Often, he would sit with a songbook and sing in the evenings. He had many favorite songs and served many years as a song leader both at Fairview and later at Texline. He led songs with enthusiasm, always on the right pitch, never using a pitch pipe.
Dad spent his life being a farmer, dairyman, and carpenter. Planting a garden every year was important to him. Many times, he would help other people by tilling their gardens. Dad was a handyman and could fix almost anything.
He accepted life as it was and when the need came to go to the assisted living, he graciously accepted his lot. While living there he continued to garden, caring for the vegetables and flowers. His faith and the Church were precious to him, and he remained faithful to the end. His relationship with his Lord was alive, and he often talked of his touched from God. He loved to visit about spiritual things, often giving reproof, and encouraging us to faithfulness.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his loving wife of nearly 70 years, Sylvia Jean; five sons and three daughters: Delilah and Charles Smith, Chickasha, OK; Gary and Peggy, Dalhart, TX; Darrell and Sonja, Farwell, TX; Quinn and Donna, Sedan, NM; Felecia and Dwain, Verden, OK; Kerwin and Valerie, Dalhart, TX; Brendon and Heidi, Texline, TX; Marvilyn and Briceson Nightingale, Hartsville, SC; 29 grandchildren; 51 great grandchildren; two sisters: Luella Schmidt, Moundridge, KS; Rosena and Gilmer Koehn, Fairview, OK; two half-sisters: Carol Swarey, Belleville, PA; LaWanda and Amos Swarey, El Dorado, KS.
