Marvin Louis Batenhorst, 70, died Monday, October 17, 2016 at his home in Hartley, Texas. Prayer Vigil and Rosary were held at 6:00 pm Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at St. Anthonys of Padua Catholic Church in Dalhart, Texas. Funeral Mass was held at 10:00 am, Thursday, October 20, 2016 at St. Anthonys of Padua Catholic Church and officiated by Monsignor Michael Colwell, Pastor. Burial to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements by Horizon Funeral Home. Marvin was born on November 14, 1945 in Amarillo, TX to Sylvester and Elsie Batenhorst. He was raised in Umbarger, TX and attended Umbarger School. Marvin married his best friend Mary Brorman on August 14, 1967 and graduated from West Texas State University in 1969. Marvin and Mary moved to Hartley, TX in 1972 where they farmed for many years. Marvin loved God, Family and his Country. He was a faithful and active member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Dalhart, TX and served on Parish and Financial Council Boards as well as the St. Anthony's Trust Board. He loved to read and learn about the Catholic faith and taught religion youth classes, RCIA and inquiry classes. Marvin was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and was the Financial Secretary for many years. He also served his community as a member of many boards including Hartley FSA Board, Dalhart Consumers and Hartley ISD. Marvin proudly served his country while in the Army at Fort Hood, TX and was a Vietnam War Veteran. Above all, he was a loving husband, father and grandfather and loved spending time with his family. Marvin never met a stranger and enjoyed visiting with others. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Survivors include wife: Mary Batenhorst of Hartley, TX, sons: Kris Batenhorst and his wife Stacy and Greg Batenhorst and his wife Shay of Dalhart, TX, daughters: Karen Martin and her husband Matt Martin of Edmond, OK, Gayle VanBeek and husband Jon of Dalhart, TX. 7 Grandchildren - Kyle, Leslie, and Joe Batenhorst and Zack, Zeek, Zane, and Zeb VanBeek all of Dalhart, TX. His brothers: Leon and Bobbie of Clarendon, TX, Ralph and Marla of Stinnett, TX, Paul and Beth of Canyon, TX and brother-in-law Gerald Adrian of Exton, PA. His sisters Irene and Lewis of Amarillo, TX, and Jane and Carl Coffelt of Canyon, TX. Marvin is also survived by several brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws and many nieces and nephews.
