LaVerne Earlene Warnken Mathews White, long-time Dalhart resident, passed away on July 1, 2021, at the age of 97. A Memorial Service is scheduled for 10 o' clock in the morning on Monday, July 19, 2021 at First Baptist Church. Arrangements are entrusted to Horizon Funeral Home. Born in Schulenberg, Texas, on February 8, 1924, to Henry and Erna Warnken, she moved as a child to a farm east of Lubbock, Texas, then to a farm east of Dalhart in 1930. She attended Colony School, a country school near the Dalhart farm and graduated from Dalhart High School in1941. Shortly after graduation, she married K.H. "Jack" Mathews. She lived in Booth Bay Harbor Maine for a short time near Jacks Coast Guard Base while he served during World War II. After the war, they returned to Dalhart and had three sons, Kenneth, Jr., Michael, and Robert. She and Jack divorced in 1964, and in July 1968, she married J.E. "Red" White, a widower with three sons, Rodney, Thomas, and Bobby. A woman of many talents and hobbies, LaVerne loved people and was active in the Dalhart community, faithfully serving her church, the First Baptist Church, her many friends and community, and many local community organizations, including the 55-Plus Club, XIT Art Association, and others, often serving as an officer in those organizations. LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Erna, husband Red, her only brother James Warnken, granddaughter Brianna, and her son Robert E Mathews. She is survived by sons Kenneth, Michael, Rodney, Thomas, and Bobby, eleven grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren.
