John Wilbert Warkentin was born on June 18, 1932 to Johann D. and Mary Penner Warkentin at Greenland, Manitoba. After a short hospital stay he peacefully passed away on February 12, 2022 at Coon Memorial Hospital in Dalhart, Texas at the age of 89. His father was crippled from polio and Dad, being the eldest son had to cut short his education in 7th grade because he was needed to help on the family farm. He was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite on December 1, 1943. On September 2, 1955 he was married to Katherine Wohlgemuth at Steinbach, Manitoba. To this union were born 2 sons and 2 daughters. They shared lifes joys and sorrows until August 27, 2018 when Mom was called home a week before their 63rd anniversary leaving him very lonely. In his early forties Dad had a meaningful reconsecration and the Church became very special to him. Dad was very concerned for the salvation of his children and grandchildren. They lived in Greenland, MB until 1978 when they moved to Swan River, MB where they spent 3 years. In 1981 they moved to Detroit, TX fulfilling a life long dream of moving to a warmer climate. There they enjoyed the beginnings of a new congregation. Dad was a builder at heart and chose this as his lifetime career. He was a hardworking, determined man and always had a vision of the finished project. He loved the interaction with his clients. This gift, along with the talent of keeping a full crew busy, led him to getting involved with many church building projects. These projects led to many friendships in Dad and Moms lives that were precious to them. In 1995 one of these projects led them to Dalhart, TX and they decided to make it their home. Dalhart became very dear to them and they filled a special place in the congregation. During their retirement they lived in Steinbach, MB for a short while. He returned to Dalhart, TX after Moms passing. Here he found purpose and fulfillment in being involved with his sons construction business. A recent highlight was supervising the school construction project at Texline, TX. The Lord drew near to Dad in his final days and gave him a peace that passeth understanding. His desire was to go be with the Lord. We as the family are thankful to God for giving us an example of faith in our father and mother. Those left with precious memories are: his children: Bonnie and Wayne Penner of Steinbach, MB; Reno and Elmina Warkentin of Yuma, AZ; Debbie and Mike Wiebe of Filer, ID; Ryan and Jennifer Warkentin of Dalhart, TX; sixteen grandchildren and thirty-one great grandchildren, his siblings: Virginia and Victor Toews; Marvin and Lois Warkentin; Mildred and Harry Isaac; brother-in-law Percy Goossen; sister-in-law Mary Ann Warkentin; and Moms family: 4 sisters-in-law, Mildred Penner, Olive Towes, Libby Wohlgemuth and Frances Goossen, brother-in-law Norman and Darlene Wohlgemuth. He was preceded in death by his wife Katherine, his parents, parents-in-law, 1 sister, 1 brother, 9 brothers-in-law and 5 sisters-in law.
