John Wesley Petersen, 93, of Dalhart, Texas, passed from this life to glory on Sunday, December 9, 2018. He was born to Nels and Elizabeth in Minden, NE on July 2, 1925 as their only child. At the age of 21 he married the love of his life, Joan, on November 20, 1946. Two years later they welcomed their first child, Sandy. A son, Russ, arrived a couple years after that on Friday the Thirteenth amidst a huge blizzard. Wes and Joan were adventurous together, moving their farming operations to different states. Initially, Wes farmed with his father in Minden until Nels death in 1948. Soon after, opportunity knocked in Illinois when they traded their Nebraska land into an Illinois farm near DeKalb. Wess mother moved with them. In 1958 they sold the Illinois farm and bought land in Western Minnesota, near a little town called Clarkfield. They also fed cattle there out of a Harvestore system Wes always reflected how wonderful his feed quality and cattle performance was with these. He also never forgot the awful cattle crash of 1974. As much as he loved cattle, he quit raising cattle after that. In 1978 they moved from Minnesota to Dalhart along with their adult children and spouses. In the mid-1990s he quit farming and started a trucking business, driving a semi well into his 70s. He was known for his quick wit and gregarious nature. Sometimes that quick wit caused a temporary marital spat with his better half, but she still spoiled him. Wes loved to visit and talk farming, politics, or religion. His grandsons listened to many old farming stories from days gone by stretching from the John Deere D when he was a child forward to the 70s. Family get together prayers were very lengthy and heartfelt. To say he was a man of faith was an understatement. He fervently believed in Jesus Christ all his days, as does Joan still. Singing was something he enjoyed, especially gospel songs. He was in a travelling quartet when he wasnt busy farming in his late teens and early twenties before marriage. Wes sang with Sandy and Russ many times in church services when the kids were younger. Wes and Joan stayed basically independent until the week of Wes stroke. To be living together at home with only limited help at the ages of 93/89 is a rarity, and they were beaming proud of their 72 year marriage. Their friends, The Lidster Family, receive special appreciation for everything theyve done for this couple. Joan will grieve along with their daughter Sandy and her husband, Tom Stenson; children Bethany Scroggins and Sara Heiser. Son Russ Petersen and wife Betty; children Jeff Petersen, Charity Hale, Cindy Snyder, Cody Petersen, Elissa Holt, and Tate Petersen. There are many grandchildren and great children following Wes footsteps. It is quite extraordinary so many grandchildren (8) and great grandchildren (24) and (1) great-great grandchild got to know their elders and visit with them. One grandchild, Lorelle Petersen, and one great-grandchild, Teegan Petersen, preceded Wesley in death the family likes to think of all of them reunited in worship in Heaven.
