John C. Ortiz, 93, died Thursday, August 17, 2017 in Pampa, Texas.Vigil was held at 7:00pm on Sunday, August 20, 2017. Funeral Mass was held at 10:00am on Monday, August 21, 2017. Officiating- Monsignor Michael Colwell, Pastor of St. Anthonys of Padua. Burial did follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery with Military Honors. Arrangements provided by Horizon Funeral Home, Dalhart, TX.John Ortiz was born on Friday, September 14, 1923 in Wagon Mound, NM to Nerio Felipe & Eloisa (Vigil) Ortiz. John served in the 29th Infantry Division U.S. Army for four years. He was in Normandy, Omaha Beach, Luxembourg, Belgium, Holland and France. He was wounded while in France and received the Purple Heart Metal of Honor. He held the rank of Staff Sgt while on active duty. After being discharged in September of 1945 he worked for the Army until 1961 in the Army dept in Pueblo, Co. He worked at the depot and worked with the Secret Service, having two jobs while in Colorado. John married Mary D. Abeyta on May 6, 1970 and moved to Dalhart, TX. John is survived by his loving wife of 47 years Mary D. Ortiz , 2 daughters- Dolores Salas of Clovis, NM and Rubie Sirmans of Pampa, TX, 10 Grandchildren- Olivia Fox, Alexandria Fox, Samuel Fox, Jaxson Sirmans, Anna Hernandez, Alice Grine, Johnny Salas, Anthony Salas, Brookelyn Sirmans, Jeffrey Sirmans, 9 Great Grandchildren- Braxton Fox, Aaron Salas, Brenda Salas, Veronica Garcia, Cassandra Hernandez, Manuelita Grine, Eugene Grine, Lupe Hernandez, Santiago Hernandez and 6 Great Grandchildren- Vanessa Armijo, Josiah Durdin, Isaiah Salas, Aubrey Salas, Jennifer Salas and Mariah Hernandez as well as 2 brothers & 1 sister. John is preceded by both his parents, a grandson- Jeremiah Fox, 4 brothers and 2 sisters.There will be no public visitation or viewing.
