Jack McMeen, 97, passed away on Wednesday, November 9, 2022 in Dalhart, Texas. A graveside service will be held Saturday, November 12, 2022 at 1:30 p.m. in Memorial Park Cemetery with Pastor Barry Walker officiating. Jack will lay in state for viewing at Horizon Funeral Home Friday, November 11, 2022 from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Jack Henry McMeen was born on February 12, 1925, in Mineral Wells, Texas in his Grandfathers house to Beverly Washington McMeen (Bev) and Birdie May McMeen. Jack enjoyed life with two cousins as they played in the creek at Caddo, Texas and hunted in the hilly country. He attended all of his school years in Dalhart and upon his graduation enlisted in the Marine Corp where he fought in the second Marine Division as a Browning Automatic Rifleman from 1943 to 1946. His service took him to New Caledonia, New Zealand, New Hebrides Islands, Tarawa, Hawaii, Saipan, Tinian, Okinawa and Nagasaki. Jack was honored as the Veterans Day Parade Marshal in 2021 and was announced to be Dalharts last living World War II Veteran. Upon his discharge he returned to Dalhart where he met Betty June Kelly of Nara Visa, New Mexico, and they were married on January 27, 1947, and shared their life together until her death on January 10th of 2020. Their 73 years of marriage was never expected to last as she was one of 11 children and he an only child, but he always said she had enough family to share. Jack was a man who lived a life of service. He worked for the Dalhart Consumers in the meat locker, feed store and the grain elevator until his retirement and his goal was always to provide the best service for his customers. His family was of great importance and he could be found taking family hunting and fishing, water skiing with his children every summer evening and providing camping with all sorts of experiences. Nothing was more important than seeing his family worship together and he served the Lord and First Christian Church as a deacon, elder, teacher and used his skills in carpentry work at El Povenier Camp. Jack could be found serving his community in very quiet ways. Many a project were repaired or built for someone in need, he provided hours of transportation for those who needed the support of medical transportation and he provided much solid wisdom to many young men in their early years. He gave 41 years of service to the Dalhart Volunteer Fire Department. If he had been granted eye sight in his last years we are sure he would have still been giving to those who needed his services, enjoying woodworking projects and creating many inventions that usually worked. He is survived by daughter, Beverly and husband Tom of Borger, son Patrick and wife Dolly of Amarillo, three granddaughters and five great grandchildren. He has been honored by many friends who spent time visiting on his front porch and for that his family is most appreciative. Jack was a faithful man full of service to God, country, family, and friends. To plant Memorial Trees in memory of Jack Henry McMeen, please click here to visit our Sympathy Store.
