Jack Detwiler, 89, of Richardson, Texas passed away at home on March 25 from late-onset ALS. A loving husband and father, he will be remembered for his kind and gentle demeanor, his creativity and resourcefulness, respect for optimal health through good nutrition, and a hard-working dedication to self-made opportunities. A Graveside Service is scheduled for 11:00AM on Monday, April 3, 2023 in Memorial Park Cemetery in Dalhart. Arrangements are entrusted to Horizon Funeral Home of Dalhart.
Jack was born during the Great Depression in Newton, Kansas. He was raised by his parents, Vance Lynn Detwiler and Mildred Rose Crouse along with his older brother Jerry and younger sister Carol in Pratt, Kansas until age 8. An opportunity on the Rock Island Railroad moved the family to Dalhart, Texas where Jack subsequently worked at Porter's Grocery after the untimely loss of his dad. He graduated from Dalhart High School in 1952. Determined to further his education, he started at Trinity College in San Antonio, completed service in the U.S. Army at McGregor Range, New Mexico (1957-1959), and ultimately graduated from Texas Tech College in 1963 with a degree in economics and psychology.
At the gentle urging of his mother, he moved to Dallas to begin a career in apparel as a clothing manufacturer's representative out of the Dallas Apparel Mart. In a serendipitous meeting at a Willow Creek apartment social, Jack met his future wife and life partner, Sandy Smith. Together they fulfilled Jack's entrepreneurial dream to create his own line, Pepperdyne Originals and then opened their own retail stores, first Tops 'N Bottoms in Amarillo and then The Blouse House in Dallas. In later years out of changing circumstances and necessityJack and Sandy bravely changed vocations, successfully building a Mountain Man Nut and Fruit Company distributorship.
After his retirement in December of 2018 at the age of 85, he busied himself designing and building simple and elegant caskets and chests from local wood. Always a passionate and instinctive tree planter, he will be fondly remembered for re-foresting his suburban home with native trees.
Jack is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sandy, daughter Michelle (Lars), son Cole, grandchildren Julian and Gisella, sister Carol Werner, sister-in-law Beth Detwiler, and many nieces and nephews.
