Imagene "Jean" Katen, 86 of Dalhart, passed away on November 1, 2021. A Graveside service is scheduled for 11 o' clock in the morning on Friday, November 5, 2021 in Memorial Park Cemetery with Pastor Bobby Medford officiating. Mrs. Katen will lay in state from noon until 8 o' clock in the evening on Thursday at the funeral home. Arrangements are entrusted to Horizon Funeral Home.
Jean was born on January 22, 1935 to Charles and Susan Harman in Binghamton, NY. She was raised in Binghamton and attended the Arthur Murray Dance School, and they went to Mexico and Canada to compete and won the Bronze/Gold trophies. She also took a night class to be a machine operator in a shop where she worked the drill press and milling machine. Jean enjoyed crafts, plastic crafts, sewing, volunteering for "Project Paws" (for cats), and assisted with the Broome County Scrapbooks for the Historical Society. She also participated in the Civil War Reenactment as a nurse and one of Jeans favorite hobbies was collecting stuffed animals, especially endangered species. Some of her favorites were elephants, silverback gorillas, large cats and snow leopards. Jean had a special place in her heart for horses; she loved all horses. She also volunteered for the XIT Museum. In the middle of all this on July 3, 1965 she married the most kind hearted, loving, selfless man, Lester H. Katen, Jr. in Binghamton, NY. They cherished every moment spent together and she was truly the "apple of his eye." Jean was happily married to her soulmate for over fifty six years until she took her last breath lying next to him. She was loved by many and will be dearly missed. She was a member of Channing United Methodist Church.
She is preceded in death by her parents; and siblings: Charles and Kathy Harman, George and Shirley Harman, Barbara Harman and Dorene Harman.
Jean is survived by her husband: Lester of Dalhart; and two daughters: Barbara Cunningham and husband James of Endicott, NY and Ruth Mathias and husband Thomas of Vestal, NY; and one granddaughter: Anne Mathias of Vestal, NY.
