Moms childhood and growing up years were on the family farm near Steinbach, Manitoba. As a child she loved the outdoors. Growing up in Canada she had the opportunity to do lots of ice skating, and we have some fond memories of her skating with us kids.
She suffered the loss of her Mother at the young age of 9. She would tell us how her siblings were there for each other during that time. Her Dad then remarried and 3 more sisters were born to the family
She attended a little 2 room school in Ridgewood, Manitoba going through the 8th grade.
She was baptized into the Church of God in Christ Mennonite in her youth. Mom loved her christian life and we would often see Bible verses written on scraps of paper. We knew Mom as a prayer warrior. She taught us how to pray at a young age. We together would often pray when we were sick or if the weather seemed stormy.
Mom worked at a hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba doing dietary work in her youth. On September 20, 1953 Mom married our Dad, Floyd Nikkel, at Steinbach, Manitoba. Their first home was in Roseburg, Oregon while Dad was in voluntary service. About a year later they settled at Iroquois, South Dakota, where they were charter members of the new congregation. Seven children were born to them there. They left their many South Dakota friends when they moved to Inman.
In 1966, our family moved to the Tony Nikkel home place at Inman, Kansas. We all worked hard together...we played, laughed, sang together, and ate lots of popcorn. Mom cooked and cared for us making simple delicious food with some of the traditional Hungarian foods she remembered from home. Mom loved nature and had a green thumb. She had many house plants that she tended with tender loving care.
Dad and Mom, Bev, Lew and Karen relocated to Dalhart, Texas in 1980 where they farmed north of town. After 33 years of marriage, we lost Dad so suddenly in 1987. Mom was a widow for 36 years. She told us how prayer sustained her through those lonely years. In Moms later years, she didn't get out as much, but she so enjoyed phone calls. We could easily be on the phone with her for 2 hours. And visiting with her dear sister Margaret was always so special.
Mom left us as she lived - quietly and with no ta-do. She was known as Granny to many in the Dalhart Congregation.
Those left with many wonderful memories are: Harlan and Ramonda Sedan, New Mexico, Jennie and Willard Koehn, Doris and John Isaac all of Inman, Kansas, Charlene and Galen Barkman of Morven, North Carolina, Beverly and Ron Toews of Dalhart, Texas, Lew and Karolyn of Ontario, Oregon, Karen Ratzlaff of Dalhart, Texas, 19 Grandchildren and 48 great grandchildren.
