Houston Burton Thompson Jr, 91, died Sunday, July 27, 2008 in Dalhart, TX.Funeral services were held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at Central United Methodist Church. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery Arrangements under the care of Horizon Funeral Home, Dalhart, TXOfficiating was Steve Patterson, Minister of the Central United Methodist Church, Dalhart, TXBurton Thompson was born to Houston Burton Thompson, Sr. and Clara Davis Thompson on May 14, 1917 in Dalhart.. Mr. Thompson was a graduate of Dalhart High School and West Texas State University. He and Annette White were married in Los Angeles, CA on December 25, 1941, and they lived in Beverly Hills for several years. At that time he was employed by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation in the Experimental Department developing military planes. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WW II and was stationed in Norman, OK, as an instructor at the Naval Air Technical Training Center. After being discharged in 1946, he returned to Dalhart with Annette and chartered the Thompson Wholesale Hardware Co., which he owned and operated for 43 years until his retirement in 1989, He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Davis Thompson. Survivors are his wife, Annette, a daughter, Sheri Perry and husband Sam of Amarillo and a son, Gary Thompson and his wife Vicki of Littleton, CO. and grandchildren Kathleen Wise and husband Mike of Broken Arrow, OK, Carolyn Roles and husband John of Charleston, SC, Kelsey Ahern and husband Mike of Austin, TX and Houston Thompson of Littleton, three great-grandchildren, Evan Roles and Houston Roles of Charleston, and Lindsey Wise of Broken Arrow, a sister-in-law, Doris White of Park Ridge, NJ and five nephews: Robert Worthy, St Louis, MO, Kent Thompson of Louisville, CO, Craig White, Park Ridge, NJ, Douglas White, Fletcher, NC and Randy White, Mooresville, NC.Burton served as president of each of the following: The Dalhart Lions club, the Toastmasters Club, the Dalhart Chamber of Commerce, the Dalhart Ex-Students Association, the Dalhart Country Club, and the Meals on Wheels Program.. He served on the Dalhart School Board and volunteered for many years with the Boy Scouts f America and the HOSTS mathematics and reading programs and the Dalhart Senior Citizens Center. Mr. Thompson was a member and Past Master of Rock Island Masonic Lodge, and belonged to the Scottish Rite and Khiva Shrine. He was honored as Dalhart Outstanding Citizen in 1965.He and Annette have been members of Central United Methodist Church for 57 years, where he served as Chairman of the Administrative Board and on many boards and committees and was an active member of the Open Door Sunday School Class. With Annette he enjoyed many trips, cruises and tours, sometimes with their children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed golf and gardening.The Thompson family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday (July 29, 2008) at Horizon Funeral Home 701 Elm Ave. Dalhart, TXThe family suggests memorials to Central United Methodist Church, Dalhart Senior Citizens Association or to a favorite charity.
