Horace Estes, 86, passed away on Sunday, November 12, 2017 in Amarillo, TX. Memorial Service were at 2:00 pm on Thursday, November 16, 2017 at the Peoples Church in Dalhart, Texas. Officiating was by Tim Estes, Pastor of the Newlife Church in Siloam Springs, AR. Burial did will follow at the Memorial Park Cemetery, Dalhart, TX. Arrangements provided by Horizon Funeral Home, Dalhart, Texas. Horace Estes passed away in his home in Amarillo, Texas, on November 12, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. He was born September 16, 1931, to Vance and Alberta Tomlinson Estes on the Estes family farm near Allison, Texas. He was a farmer dating back several generations of farmers from North Carolina. He loved the land and nature. He was a God-fearing man and loved his God, family, friends and country. The Estes family moved to Dalhart in 1943. He graduated 8th grade from Colonys one-room school and went on to graduate from Dalhart High School. He also attended Draughns Business College. Horace married the love of his life, Roma Wilburn on December 22, 1950. They lived out on his familys farm before building a home in Dalhart in 1964. He and his family enjoyed snow skiing trips and trips to the mountains. He enjoyed flying his airplane and seeing the country and livestock by air and occasionally, dipping down and "herding" them. It was never hard to talk him into a good game of dominoes or a good conversation over coffee and donuts. One of Horaces great loves was old time gospel and old time country music. He enjoyed gathering his family around the piano and singing in harmony. He led singing at his church for many years. The lights of his life were his grandchildren and great grandchildren. They called him "Poppy" and he loved hearing them calling him that sweet, endearing name. Every time he prayed, he would ask God to bless each one of them. Horace moved to Amarillo to be close to his grandchildren, great grandchildren and his two daughters. Each Monday evening, he would have dinner with his daughters and as they were ending the evening, it was ended in prayer. The past few years, he would end his prayer with The Lords Prayer and that prayer has endeared itself greatly to his family. He was a consummate gentlemen always opening doors for others, taking his hat off in a building, and treated everyone with dignity and respect. Up to the last time he entered his home, he would be the last one in the home because of holding the door and allowing women to enter first. Horace had a generous heart and when he heard of a need, would quietly give of himself or his resources to take the burden off someone else. He was voted Farmer of the Year in 1967, served on the Dallam/Hartley County Memorial Hospital Board and the Farm Bureau Board. Horace was preceded in death by his wife, Roma Wilburn Estes, his parents Vance and Alberta Estes, as well as his in-laws, Horace and Odetta Kilgore Wilburn. Survivors include Wade Estes of Dalhart, LuAnn Estes Taylor and husband Richard Taylor of Amarillo, Diane Estes of Amarillo, and Brian Estes and wife Susan Romero Estes of Taos, NM as well as a brother, Vestal Estes and his wife, Shirley of Siloam Springs, AR. He has two grandchildren, Ashley Taylor Smith and husband Dr. Cameron Smith, of Broken Arrow, OK, and Tyson Taylor and wife Jenny Taylor of Arlington, Texas; he is also survived by five great grandchildren, the lights of his life, Madilyn Kate Smith, Henry Milo Taylor, Thatcher Ryan Smith, Wyatt Alexander Smith and Soren James Taylor. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Horace Estess home in Amarillo, Texas.
