Helen Childers, 89, died on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 in Dalhart, TXServices were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 20, 2009 at the First Baptist Church in Dalhart with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery.Officiating was Rev. Bob McAlister, Minister to Senior Adults, First Baptist Church, Dalhart, Texas.Helen was born in Tyrone, OK to Blanche and George Locke on July 22, 1919. She graduated from Dalhart High School in 1936.After graduation she attended Business School in Hutchison, KS. Upon returning home, Helen married her high school sweetheart, Russell Childers, on March 1, 1947 In Liberal, KS and they were happily married for 57 years.They resided in Guymon, OK for six years. In 1958 the family returned to Dalhart where Russell had been the Tax and Business Manager for the Dalhart Independent School District for many years while Helen was a loving, dedicated homemaker.Helen was a member of the First Baptist Church and had been since she was a young child.She had a full and joyful life and many good friends. She was a very gifted seamstress, and was known for her talent to transform anything she desired into a true work of art. Her passions included a good bridge game, going to the mountains every summer in their motor home, and she never passed up a fun shopping trip. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and delighted in spending time with family. She will be truly missed.She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Blanche Locke and her brother, Don Locke.Survivors include two daughters, Terri Miller of Dalhart, TX and Carolyn Sherrod and husband Randy, of Canyon, TX: four granddaughters, Whitney Tuls of Dalhart, Shana Miller of Lubbock, Darcy Miller of Omaha, NE and Tara Sherrod of Canyon, TX; a very special niece, Carrie Lou Draper and husband Jim of Guymon, OK;and four great-grandchildren, Keaton, Ky, Rhylan and Sabien.The family requests any memorials to the Meals on Wheels Program which Russell and Helen supported for years.
