Harlon E. Gaskill, 84, died Saturday, January 26, 2013 in Dalhart, TXPrayer Vigil and Rosary was held at 7:30 pm Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at St. Anthonys Catholic Church, Dalhart, Texas.Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at St. Anthonys Catholic Church, Dalhart, Texas Officiating - Monsignor Michael Colwell, PastorBurial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Horizon FuneralHome - Dalhart, Texas. Harlon Edward Gaskill was born to James Frank Gaskill and Lottie Carter Gaskill in Wolfe City, Texas on February 14, 1928. He married the love of his life Frances Pauline Surovcak on June 21, 1949. Harlon attended East Texas State University and the University of Houston from which he received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, Cum Laude in accounting in 1960. Harlon worked for Sheffield, Garrett & Carter, public accounting firm in Houston, Texas, 1960 to 1963. November 1, 1963, he opened a Public Accounting practice in Dalhart, Texas. This practice expanded into the present corporation known as Gaskill, Pharis & Pharis, P.C. Harlon was past President and member of the Dalhart Rotary Club for 25 years. He was elected to the Dalhart ISD Board of Education for 5 consecutive terms, 1969 to 1984 and served on the Board of Trustees of the Texas Association of School Boards from 1973 to 1980, serving as Secretary in 1980. He was Director of the Dalhart Area Chamber of Commerce and was named Citizen of the Year in 1992. He also served as director of the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, and United Fund.A member of St. Anthonys Catholic Church, Harlon served as President of Parish Council, President of St. Anthonys Catholic School Board, Chairman of Finance Committee, communion minister, lay reader and member of Knights of Columbus. He recently received special recognition for 50 years as a CPA from the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy. He was a member of American Institute of CPAs, Texas Society of CPAs, and the Panhandle Chapter of TXCPA. Harlon is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Frances Gaskill of Dalhart. He is also survived by his six children, daughter Alicia Vilfordi and husband Chris of Farmers Branch; daughter Felice Bryant and husband Bob of Katy; son, Mark Gaskill and wife Kay of Worthington, Ohio; daughter Denise Clayton and husband Bobby of Dalhart; son, Matthew Gaskill and wife Renea of Waco; and daughter Lisa Surginer of Katy.Twenty-one grandchildren called Harlon, Popo. They include: Adam and Kathy Vilfordi, Aaron and Lisa Vilfordi, Alex Vilfordi, Nathan and Christina Bryant, Matt and Natalie Boening, Noel and Kate Bryant, Ryan and Karly Gaskill, Daren and Amanda Gaskill, Brandon and Chrissie Tomchuk, Austin and Cathie Tomkies, Jonathan Clayton and Caitlin Ketron, Jacob and Sydney Cox, Jordan and Megan Gaskill, Corbin Gaskill, Carter Gaskill,Cristin Viera-Juarez, Rylie Viera-Juarez, Morgan Gray, Anthony Pierce, Timothy Surginer and Zachary Surginer.He was also Great-Grandfather to Braden Arnold, Alison Boening, Gavin Tomchuk, Zeke Bryant, Jacob Boening, Jude Clayton, Caleb Vilfordi, Grant Vilfordi, and Baby Tomkies.Other survivors include Harlons sisters, Ruth Hickey and husband Leroy; Peggy Gray and husband Bob; and 6 nieces.Preceding him in death were his parents Frank and Lottie Gaskill, Frank and Polly Surovcak, brother Kenneth and wife Betty; brother-in-law Frank Surovcak, Jr. and son-in-law, Robert Surginer.Everyone who knew Harlon knew what an extraordinary man he was. They knew love, friendship, wise counsel, compassion, and affection. Foremost in his life was his faith in God, his love for his wife and family, his constant willingness to be of service to others and his genuine love of people and life. His family is grateful for every day shared with him and we celebrate his wonderful life and the knowledge that he is at peace in the arms of Our Heavenly Father.
