Guadalupe "Pete" Lovato passed away on July 16, 2020 in Dalhart, TX. He was 87 years old. A Rosary was held at 9:30 a.m. with Mass following at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 24, 2020 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church with burial i Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pete was born on December 6, 1932 in Roy, New Mexico to father, Guadalupe Lovato and mother, Virginia Naranjo Lovato. The fourth of five children, he is predeceased by his parents, brother Joe Lovato of Kennewick, Washington and sister Connie Lovato of Santa Cruz, California.
After graduating from Dalhart High School in 1950, he spent time attending college in Greely, Colorado.
In 1957, he married Gilberta "Gilly" Leal and together raised six children.
While his young family was growing up, Pete worked hard as a provider, often owning and operating businesses while, simultaneously, working at the Texas Department of Transportation. His restaurant, La Fiesta Mexican Food, was truly a family affair and was one of Dalharts favorite dining establishments. He later shifted gears and bought Tonys Package (Liquor) Store.
Pete wore many hats in his lifetime: mechanic, truck driver, cook, 4-H leader, basketball coach, husband, father, grandfather He was something of a "jack of all trades" and was as comfortable behind a grill as he was under the hood of a car. He could shoot the breeze with you and have you believing every word he said until he flashed that sly grin and you knew he had been pulling your leg.
He enjoyed being a lectern at Saint Anthonys Catholic Church in Dalhart and was active in the Knights of Columbus. After serving as the Maintenance Supervisor in Vega, he later retired from the Department of Transportation after filling that same post in Dalhart.
Pete is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Gilberta Lovato, and six children: Roxanne and husband Orlando Tapia of Cabot, Arkansas; Anthony Lovato and Dorothy Roberts of Amarillo, Texas; Kathryn Lichter of St. Charles, Illinois; Louis Lovato of Dalhart, Texas; and Nancy Lovato and husband David Clark of Houston, Texas. He is also survived by two brothers, Leo Lovato of Guymon, Oklahoma and Frank Lovato of Slidell, Louisiana, as well as seven grandchildren: Jonathan and Joshua Tapia; Brian Lovato and wife, Alysha Lovato; Jenna Lovato and husband, Michael Henderson; D.J. Roberts; and Ashley and Justin Lichter. Preceding him in death is daughter, Suzan Lovato; grandson, Michael Eric Tapia and daughters-in-law, Lisa Hill Lovato and Stacey Staley.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Pete's name to assist Saint Anthony's Catholic School.
