Geneva Layman 82 of Amarillo, formerly of Dalhart died Sunday, March 10, 2013 in Amarillo, Texas. Services were held on Friday March 15, 2013 at 1:30 at Central United Methodist Church.Geneva Porter Layman - August 18, 1930 to March 10, 2013 Geneva was the 7th child born to Earl and Ruth Smith Porter in Cumberland, IA. She grew up in the small town of Cumberland and graduated as Valedictorian of Cumberland HS. She had been offered a country school teaching job her Jr. Year in HS and she attended Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Rapids, IA, the summer after graduation and completed the courses necessary to take the assignment. She taught 1st 8th grade that year. Rather than remaining at the country school another year, Geneva decided to return to Cedar Rapids to complete the 2 year teaching program. She was hired in Rockwell City, IA, where her sister Wanda lived and continued her teaching career as a second grade teacher in the Old West School. It was during this time that she met Harold Layman. They married on May 25, 1952 in Cumberland and made their home in Rockwell City. Geneva continued to teach until 1958. Lori was born in 1959 and Brent and Bill were born in 1962. The Rockwell City school superintendent called Geneva every year and asked her to come back to teaching. She finally accepted a day position teaching Kindergarten when the boys went to school. She continued in that position until 1974. During this time the requirements for teaching had changed and now required a Bachelors Degree. Geneva enrolled and completed her degree at Drake Univerisity in Des Moines, attending Saturday and summer classes while raising her family and working. Harold and Geneva were members of Rockwell City Methodist Church where they served on numerous leadership commitees. Geneva was in neighborhood circles and they were in a card club that enjoyed many years of friendship.In 1974 Harold and Geneva made the decision to sell out in Iowa and purchased a section of land in Dalhart, TX. They moved, first to Perico and then to 1204 Winchester Circle, Dalhart. They joined, and were active in Central Methodist Church. Geneva was a member of Las Viegeras Study Club and Xi Delta Gamma. She was the director for the writing contest in the schools for several years. The school superintendent in Dalhart had discovered that Geneva was a certified teacher and also called her every summer asking her to teach. She accepted a position in 1977 and taught in Dalhart for several years. During this time she enrolled at West Texas State University and began her Masters of counseling program, graduating on her 54th birthday. She completed the requirements and was a Liscensed Professional Counselor. She accepted a teaching job for Amarillo ISD during this time and later moved to an elementary counseling position, spending many extra hours ensuring that her students needs were cared for. She retired from the education in 1994 with 32 years of experience. Geneva was a loving ond supportive grandmother to her 3 grandchildren: Crystal Novak Troster, Jay Novak and Bradly Layman. She enjoyed being involved in their lives and the grandchildren have many fond memories of time with her. Harold passed away on May 7, 1995 and Geneva remained in Dalhart until 2004 when she moved to the Craig Retirement Center in Amarillo to be closer to her children. Most recently she resided at Seville Estates in AmarilloShe will be missed because of her devotion to her family and students, her love of the people in her life, and her enthusiasm for little things.Survivors include :Daughter: Lori and her husband Tom Novak of Amarillo, TX, Sons: Bill Layman of McLean, TX, Brent Layman of Canadian, TX , Granddaughter: Crystal Novak, Burleson, TX, Grandsons: Jay and his wife Jamey Novak of Amarillo, TX, Bradley Layman, Canadian, TX, Sister-in-law: Betty Jean Porter, Cumberland, IA, and several loving nieces and nephews.Preceded in death by her husband, parents, and siblings.The family will receive guests in Amarillo the night before the service, Thursday March 14, 2013 from 7:00 to 8:30 at 9100 Perry Ave.Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church, 517 Rock Island, Dalhart, Texas 79022, or Cal Farleys Boys Ranch, P.
