A celebration of the life of W. Gene Hendrix was held at the First Baptist Church in Dalhart, on Friday, December 15th at 11:00 AM. Officiating was Clifford Dane with services under the auspices of Horizon Funeral Home.W. Gene Hendrix was an early morning arrival at the home of Oris Eulajean and Ewin Hendrix on January 23, 1940. He was a lifelong resident of Dalhart (excepting two years when the family lived in Delta, Colorado) and graduate of Dalhart High School where he lettered in football and basketball. Upon graduation, Gene was hired by the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Rail Road, and subsequently the Southern Pacific Rail Road, the Denver, Rio Grande & Western Rail Road, and finally the Union Pacific Rail Road.On the occasion of their marriage, August 19, 1967, Gene and Carol Williams embarked on the adventure of a lifetime.His expertise in wood working made Gene a valued volunteer in set construction at the La Rita Theater. His participation in the renovation of the La Rita was fueled by his pride in his community and the preservation of a historical edifice. He was also instrumental in fund raising for several years for the Don and Sybil Harrington Foundation.He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, brother Edwin Hendrix and wife Virginia; nephew and wife David and Kathy Hendrix of Cedar Falls, Iowa, niece and husband Debbie and Dwight Renshaw of Dalhart, and an aunt Ethyl Clevenger of Dalhart.
