Gary Lee Koehn was born to Leo and Edna Koehn on September 4, 1940, in Halstead, Kansas.
He peacefully left this world at the Legacy Assisted Living in Dalhart, Texas, on the morning of December 24, 2022, at eighty-two years of age. Dad grew up in Halstead, Kansas, and attended Wild Rose School, a small country school near Burrton, Kansas, until the eighth grade. Dad began farming in Halstead at the age of sixteen when he took over his grandpas farm. He was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite on January 22, 1956, by Minister Reuben J Koehn. He remained faithful to these vows. On October 25, 1959, he married Carol Koehn of Scott City, Kansas. They shared sixty-three wonderful years.
Our parents spent their service days in Tucumcari, New Mexico. Later, they purchased an egg farm and this provided a living until they moved to Texline, Texas, in 1976. Dads job the first winter after relocating was doing the plumbing for the new Texline church. He farmed in the area until his retirement in 2005, when he purchased rent houses in Texline. Dad had a knack for connecting with people and often went out of his way to talk with and help the people in the community.
For most of his life our dad was an early riser. He had a strong work ethic and a contagious enthusiasm for what needed to be done. Work before play was his motto and many a fun vacation was taken after a project was completed.
Dad passed on the blessings he received from the Lord by helping where he could. He and our mother took many into their home and hearts, and mentored others as they began farming on their own. In later years, the family and others knew there was a standing invitation to stop in for night lunch on Sunday evenings.
It was always a highlight for our parents when it was time for another Tucumcari reunion. They delighted in continuing old friendships, renewing acquaintances, and revisiting old memories.
We as a family are so grateful that our dad and grandpa gave us sure landmarks to live by. His personal and caring prayers touched us, and we remember him often reading his Bible. Grandpas house was a secure place to visit. Family meant a lot to him, and he was involved in his childrens and grandchildrens lives. When each one was converted, he wanted to personally hear their experience.
His survivors include his wife, Carol; three daughters: Donna and Donovan Nikkel, Dalhart, Texas, Fonda and Gareth Eicher, Texline, Texas, and Monica and Brian Nightingale, Texline, Texas; nine grandchildren, and fourteen great- grandchildren; siblings Leroy and Dee Koehn, Rita and Ronnie Jantz, Harold and Sharon Koehn, and Charles and Gaylene Koehn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister-in-law, Ruth; a sister, Glenda, and brother-in-law, Orlie; and a baby grandson, Derrick.
