William Gary Johnson, 69, was called to his heavenly home on Tuesday, March 28, at Baptist St. Anthony Hospital in Amarillo, Texas. He was born on January 4, 1954, in Amarillo, Texas to William Glenn and Phyllis L. (Bobby) Crawford Johnson. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend.
Gary graduated from Dalhart High School Class of 1972 and was very active in football, basketball, rodeo, and home economics. His specialty in Home Economics was honey cakes. He graduated from Texas Christian Universitys Farm & Ranch Management program in 1973 along with his best friend for life, Ike Carter. He came back home to marry his high school sweetheart, Terri Lynn Garner on June 12, 1973. They built a life together of farming, ranching, rodeoing, and creating a beautiful family. Gary and Terri team roped together along with many friends. One of Garys proudest roping achievements was winning the fastest time with Clayton Ward at the 1981 Bob Feist Invitational Team Roping. Gary had many hobbies including being a licensed pilot, his creativity of metal sculpting, and writing poetry. He was a Dalhart High School Alumni and had a heart filled with Purple & Gold for the Dalhart Wolves and Lady Wolves. He was a past member of the DISD school board and was an active member of the 2023 School Bond Committee. He just attended his 50th Class Reunion and was reunited with his friends. Gary was an active member at St. James Anglican Church for almost 40 years. He loved the Lord with all his heart and knew his place would be in Heaven someday. He loved his church family, Father Ray, and his small Sunday School Group. He will also be remembered for being the highest in ticket sales this year for his churchs Annual Shrove Pancake Supper! Gary didn't know a stranger. He had the gift of gab and could tell many stories and loved his moments with his "Breakfast Club". He was witty, smart, knowledgeable, and always had a can-do attitude in life. He worked and traveled many miles working for RCIS as a crop adjuster and made many friends around the Tri-State area. His greatest joy was his family. His wife was the love of his life. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. He always bragged and showed all of their accomplishments and even becoming a father again at 51 kept him young.
Gary was preceded in death by his mother and father, Glenn and Bobby Johnson, and his father-in-law, CL Garner.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years this June, Terri. Also survived by his mother-in-law, Alice Garner; his sister Gwyn and Bud Davidson. Brother-in-law Brad and Sandy Garner.
