Esther Thomas, 89 - Died Friday, October 1, 2004 with her family by her side. Services were held at 10:00 am Monday, October 4, 2004 at the Central United Methodist Church with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Horizon Funeral HomeJeff Taylor, Pastor, Central United Methodist Church officiated. Esther Humes Thomas was born in Cawker City, Kansas on July 6, 1915 to William and Emma (Reling) Humes. At age 5 1/2 the family moved to Traer, Kansas. She attended school in Traer until her last 2 years, which she finished in Oberlin, Kansas graduating in 1933Esther met her husband, A.G. "Tommy" Thomas in Oberlin and they married in Beloit, Kansas on September 26, 1938, Esther has been an active member of the Central United Methodist Church since moving to Dalhart in 1947, when Rock Island Railroad transferred her husband to this area.Esther served in many offices in the Wesleyan Guild, taught Sunday school for many years and played the piano for over 30 years for the Sunday School Department. She played the piano for the Wesleyan Church for nearly 10 years on a temporary basis until they could find a pianist. Since 1970 she helped at Coon Memorial Nursing Home every Sunday and Wednesday, playing the piano for their devotional services.Esther served on the Tri-State Fair Board, was a director of the local health fair for 6 years. She worked with the 4-H youth in many capacities, was a member of the Rehm Extension Club, Better Mothers Club, 55+ Club, Keep Dalhart Beautiful Club, Golden Wolves Band Boosters, during her sons years in school. She worked as a Pink Lady with Coon Memorial Home Auxiliary for 9 10 years then switched to Coon Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, where she served for 15 years, helped with Meals On Wheels and helped other organizations whenever needed.She was an avid gardener, raising many beautiful flowers. She was an excellent cook and loved to bake. Her special favorites were cinnamon Rolls, hot rolls and sugar cookies. She prepared meals of the Dalhart Board of Realtors and the Dalhart Lions Club Board for many years, hosting them in her home. She helped her churchs womens guild every years at thanksgiving by preparing and delivering a full traditional meal to the Dalhart Rescue Mission, She also baked pies and cakes to help out the annual firemans supper because she wanted to let them know she appreciated them.Esther was named Dalharts Citizen of the Year in 1999, which she felt very honored to have been chosen. She has always been a loving and caring individual who enjoyed life and had a smile and a hug for nearly everyone. She always had a good word to say about Dalhart, even to total strangers, telling them what a great place this was to live.The family requests memorials be given to Dalhart Meals on Wheels - Dumas Hospice organization or the a favorite charity.Survivors: one son - Eldon Thomas, who lives in Dalhart with his wife, Evelyn - 3 grandchildren and 7 great - grandchildren.
