Dyllon Martin Orthman, 17, passed unexpectedly on Friday, January 3, 2020 in Dalhart, Texas.
Memorial Services were held Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at Newlife Fellowship in Dalhart, Texas, officiated by Richard Rodriguez.
Dyllon was born Wednesday, March 6, 2002 in Tucumcari, NM to Ken and Kristi (Shafer) Orthman. Dyllon was known in his family as an avid outdoorsman. It did not matter where he was, he loved the mountains and ocean; as well as, fishing and hunting. Dyllon also enjoyed relaxing while playing video games, being with his friends, or hanging out with his dog, Panda. His family and friends say the he could best be described as an old soul, his kindness and respect was something that was so sincere, it couldnt be taught. Dyllon loved his family, and was a wonderful, son, brother, grandson and friend.
Dyllon was perhaps best known in our small community as the young man who made national headlines for his "Mowing for Moore" Project. This project gave hope to the people of Moore, OK by raising $16,000 to help with relief after the devastating tornadoes. The following year, Dyllons kindness spread again when he started the "Pennies for a Playground" Project, which was instrumental in raising money for a new handicap accessible playground for the Dalhart Intermediate School. This playground was accessible to all children, allowing everyone to play together, without exclusion. This goal was reached with the help of some local friends whose hearts were as big and selfless as Dyllons. For his efforts, Dyllon was named the Dalhart Volunteer of the Year and received the Key to the City. Though Dyllons time with us was short, he leaves a legacy for current and future generations to build upon.
Always remember the incredible and selfless young man that Dyllon was. We as a community, should rejoice in the memories and love that Dyllon left with us all, and strive to pay forward the lessons he taught us: to do better and care more for each other.
Dyllon is survived by his parents, Ken and Kristi (Shafer) Orthman of Dalhart, TX, his siblings; Rudy Lopez of Tucson, AZ, Heaven Lucero and husband Jason of Dalhart, TX and Kendra Orthman of Dalhart, TX, his maternal grandparents; Byron and Roxy Shafer of Valley View, TX and Marilyn McKiddie of San Jon, NM, his paternal grandfather, A.W. Orthman of Conchas Dam, NM, great grandfather, Bill Cain of San Jon, NM, a nephew, many aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and best friend, Logan Epp.
