Dorothy McClendon passed away Thursday, October 8, 2009, in Dalhart, Texas.Graveside services were held at 11:00 am on Monday, October 12, at Memorial Park Cemetery, Dalhart, Texas.Officiating was Minister Ray Guy, West Amarillo Christian ChurchDorothy Mae Redman was born in Thermopolis, Wyoming to Sam and Joyce Reese Redman on November 13, 1917. She was welcomed by an older brother, Carroll Redman who was eighteen months old at the time. The family also lived for a time in Oregon and California. During that time brother, Kenneth Redman and sister Eloise Redman Selby were born. The family then returned to Dalhart, TX to live. Dorothy attended Dalhart schools graduating in 1935. During high school, Dorothy enjoyed playing basketball. In those days there were three zones making up the court and Dorothy played guard in the center court. After graduation, Dorothy and Carl McClendon were married in Clayton, NM on June 22, 1935. Dorothy enjoyed gardening, reading, fishing and crocheting. She had many beautiful flowers and also enjoyed planting a vegetable garden. She volunteered as a pink lady at Coon Memorial Hospital and the XIT Museum with her good friend, Edna Martha Mitchell. She was also the familys caregiver during times of illness over the years, caring for her husband, her sister, her parents and her brother over the yearsDorothy was a homemaker, but worked outside the home, mostly in later years. She worked at Pop Gannaways in the late thirties, Johnsons Ready-to-Wear, Coon Memorial Hospital and Home, Caviness Packing as bookkeeper and Dallam-Hartley Counties Day Care Center as bookkeeper. She also kept books for her husband, Carl in his building business. She had taken a correspondence course in accounting to learn her skills. She was a long-time member of First Christian Church in Dalhart.Survivors include a Daughter: Carolyn and her husband Charles Ray of Dalhart, TX, Six Grandchildren, Beth Ray Seeley and her husband, Jeff of Carrollton, TX, Jim Ray and wife Susan of Canyon, TX, Jennifer Ray Hart and husband, Dan of Midland, TX, Julie Ray Allman and husband Mike of Benbrook, TX, Carter McClendon and wife Kelly of Topeka, KS and Henry McClendon of Muskogee, OK. There are twelve great-grandchildren, Zachory Lightfoot, Lauren Seeley, Judson Seeley, Hayden Seeley of Carrollton, TX, Jordon Ray, Jason Ray and James Ray of Canyon, TX, Sam Hart and Clara Hart of Midland, TX, Jack Allman of Benbrook, TX, Kara McClendon and Cole McClendon of Wichita, KS. Great-great granddaughter Kylie Lightfoot of Carrollton, TX. She was known as Burr-Burr to all her grandchildren, and Aunt Mae to her nieces and nephews.Preceded in death by her parents, husband Carl, one son John (1998) two brothers and one sister.Memorials may be made to First Christian Church, Meals on Wheels or The XIT Museum. www.horizonfuneral.com
