Dee W. Culbert, age 83, of Texline, passed away, Wednesday, August 12, 2026. after an extended struggle with health issues following a heart valve replacement in 2022.In accordance with his wishes, a private farewell for immediate family will take place at a later date. Cremation arrangements are under the personal care of Dalhart Funeral Home.
Dee was a devoted Christian, a loving husband, father, "Papaw," a cherished friend, and teacher. He treasured both personal autonomy and serving others. He found joy in fishing, appreciating the beauty of nature, growing giant pumpkins, and traveling with his children and grandchildren. A faithful member of the Texline Church of Christ, he led as both a deacon and elder, humbly serving others in various capacities, both within and outside the church community, for many years. While his stubborn streak could sometimes be frustrating, Dee was a man of uncommon integrity, generously sharing his time, energy, intellect, resources, and humor, and encouraged many students to “quiet down and focus in.”
A distinctly wise father and teacher, he often told his young children that he valued their respect more than their love. It's no surprise to those who knew him that his children, and many others, loved and respected him in equal measure.
Born during World War II on Wednesday, December 2, 1942, in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, Dee was the son of James Cooper and Pearl Marie (Matthews) Culbert. He graduated from Beggs High School in 1960 and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served aboard the submarine tender USS Sperry and on San Nicolas Island off the coast of California. After his honorable discharge, he enrolled at Panhandle State University in Goodwell, Oklahoma, where he met Joyce Mae Anstine of Telluride, Colorado. They married in 1966. Following Joyce's passing in 2013, he married Wanda Stone of Texline on March 24, 2017, in Clayton, New Mexico. They made their home together in Texline.
Dee graduated from Panhandle State University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1968. Affectionately known as "Mr. C.," he dedicated 35 years to teaching junior high and high school mathematics in the Texline Schools and an additional five years in the Des Moines, New Mexico Public Schools.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda; his three children and their families: daughter Becky Culbert Cotton of Littlefield; son Lance and daughter-in-law Heather Culbert of Canyon; and son Mark and daughter-in-law Dr. Jeana Culbert of Shallowater. All of his children pursued long careers in various areas of public service, a testament to his example and wisdom.
Dee is also survived by four grandchildren: Justin Cotton and his wife Ashley of Lubbock; Ryan Cotton and his wife Makayla of Abilene; Kathryn Culbert Brooks and her husband Joseph of Amarillo; and Duncan Culbert of Canyon. He welcomed his first great-grandchild, Lyndee, in 2022, followed by Laicen, Lincoln, and Oaklynn.
He is further survived by three stepsons and their families: Bill Stone, Cal Stone, and Dr. Don Stone. Additionally, he is survived by his brother Don Culbert; his sisters-in-law Carole Culbert and Sue Culbert; and many other brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and special friends who were as close as family.
Dee was preceded in death by Joyce; his infant son, Jay Dee; his parents; two brothers, James "Doc" Culbert and Denzel Culbert; and three sisters, June Wright, Pat Kiddy, and Sandra Hurlbert.
Dee was surrounded by a host of friends and former students, too numerous to mention individually, but holding a special place in his heart.
In lieu of flowers, Dee’s family suggests performing a quiet act of service or making a donation to Cal Farley's Boys Ranch (PO Box 1890, Amarillo, TX 79174), High Plains Children's Home (11461 S. Western St., Amarillo, TX 79118), or a favorite charity.
