March 28, 1935 – March 3, 2025
Cleo Stoneman, age 89 years old, of Panhandle, passed away Monday, March 3, 2025, following a period of failing health.
Cleo was born in Dickens, Texas and lived in Roswell, New Mexico for 13 years before moving to Dalhart in 1979. He was the son of the late Rayburn and Bessie (Fuqua) Stoneman. He worked for several yards and at the sale barn before retiring. In his retirement, he enjoyed mowing yards, watching John Wayne and Audie Murphy, Westerns, The Andy Griffith Show, and Gunsmoke. Cleo had an incredible "green thumb" growing strawberry and even when he over-watered, his plants thrived.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Vernadell; daughter, Bessie Ione Mangino; twin grandchildren, Lisa and Marie Todd; and several brothers. Cleo is survived by his son, Arthur Stoneman of Amarillo; daughters: Angela Elam of Pampa, Beverly Marcom of Panhandle, Lorraine (Jerry) Pollock, and Isabel Pearson all of Dalhart; fourteen grandchildren, and twenty-eight great-grandchildren.
DUE TO PENDING INCLEMENT WEATHER...NOTE CHANGE IN SERVICE DATE!!!...Cleo's celebration of life will be 2:00 PM, MONDAY March 10 at Lincoln Street Baptist Church, 1019 Lincoln Street, Dalhart with Pastor Jimmye Cole officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Cleo will be in state from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon, MONDAY March 10 at Horizon Funeral Home, 701 Elm Avenue (the corner of Elm and 7th).
