Charles Winston Steel, lifetime resident of Dalhart,TX, passed away peacefully at his home on April 28, 2017. He was born on January 8, 1923 to Bertie Whaley and Charles McClure Steel.
Charles was raised on a family farm in the Rehm community, West of Dalhart, where he also attended school and drove his teacher to work via a horse-drawn wagon. He graduated from Dalhart High School in 1939, then proudly served in the Army Air Corps during WWII for three years where he was stationed in Gander, Newfoundland.
On April 9, 1949, Charles married the love of his life, Netha Lynn Gray. He was an incredible father to four children; John Winston Steel, Jane Ann Steel Kelly, David Lawrence "Larry" Steel and Richard Charles Steel.
Charles had a professional career that lasted beyond retirement. He worked at Citizens State Bank for 41 years, retiring as Chairman of the Board in 1980. He was a board member of the Dalhart Federal Savings and Loan for 29 years, was an advisory Board Member of First State Bank, a member of the Panhandle Area Bankers Association and the Texas Bankers Association. He was a founding partner in Nortex Feedlot and was in the cattle business for most of his life. Charles was also a founding partner in Baytech Oil and Gas and served with the National Cattlemens Assocation, Dalhart Lions Club, XIT Rangers, and was a past director of the XIT Rodeo and Reunion. His industrious work ethic kept him active for years, as he restored his family farm and spent many years dedicated to sharing it with his family and friends.
His lifetime of charity work included serving on the Dalhart Senior Citizens Center board, Dallam-Hartley Benevolent Trust, Golden Spurs, Dalhart Memorial Park Cemetery, Dallam-Hartley Historical Society, and Wayland Baptist University Development Board. Charles was a founding member of the Good Samaritan Christian Services, High Plains Baptist Hospital of Amarillo, and the Dalhart Community Dinner Theatre (now La Rita Theatre) of Dalhart.
Charles dedicated his life to helping others and lived by the motto "Its never too soon to do a kindness, because you never know how soon it will be too late". He supported his family and many others in the community. He also helped support the Coon Memorial Hospital, the Dallam County Library, the Dalhart Christian Academy, the Dalhart Rescue Mission, the XIT Museum and Hidden Falls Ranch Christian Youth Camp.
His greatest pleasures in life included time spent with his family and friends while fishing in the mountains, his many trips to Hawaii, playing golf, hunting, collecting arrowheads and turquoise jewelry, sitting by a cheerful fire, and enjoying a cigar in a rocking chair on the porch. Charles was a true gentleman and historian who left a lasting legacy of unconditional love, honor, and respect of others and the land. He loved the Lord, had a true servants heart and shared his faith. His loving eyes were full of joy and he shared many laughs and stories of the good ol days. He cherished his family heritage and taught the importance of family. He was a man of excellence and a true example of what everyone aspires to be.
Charles is preceded in death by his parents, Charles McClure Steel and Bertie Whaley Steel Cecil; his sister, RubyDell Steel; and two of his sons, John Winston Steel and David Lawrence "Larry" Steel.
His family left behind to honor and cherish his memory include his wife of 68 years, Netha; daughter Jane Ann Steel Kelly of Amarillo; son Richard Charles Steel and wife Pam of Big Spring; grandchildren Katy Kelly Flood and husband Tanner of Spring, Emily Kelly Lester and husband Dustin of Midland, Winston Steel Kelly and wife Cameron of Midland, Connor Winston Steel of Lubbock and Jennie Ann Steel of Waco; and Great-granddaughter Riley Kathryn Flood of Spring.
Graveside services were held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at Dalhart Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to be made to any of the organizations he was involved with or the charity of your choice.
Pallbearers are Jeff Lloyd, Michael David, Kevin Caddell, Greg Duggan, Dennis Shugart, Tommy Bell, Brent Bishop, and Johnny Trujillo.
