Carla Jean Wilkerson, 72 of Dalhart, passed away on May 8, 2023. Her memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, May 13, 2023 at Dalhart Senior Center, 610 Denrock Ave with Richard Rodriguez officiating. Horizon Funeral Home has been entrusted with her cremation. Carla was born on August 21, 1950 to Roy and Iona Stephens in Clayton, NM. Carla graduated from Clayton High school in 1968. She and Larry were married in Tucumcari, NM on July 28, 1971. They eventually made their life long home in Dalhart, TX for almost 52 years. Carla was an amazing cook, enjoyed sewing, and always delighted in being with her family and friends. Her grandchildren meant the world to her; they were her pride and joy. Carlas career started as a telephone operator in Guymon, OK. She also owned several businesses, ranging from a boutique, to operating the XIT Western Wear store in downtown Dalhart. In addition, she ran a railroad taxi service for many years. All the while, being a wonderful mother to not only their children, but many others as well. She was a self-proclaimed doctor, lawyer, whatever she needed to be to do get the job done. If you were lucky enough to know her, you knew she could put you in your place, love you like her own, and bless you like no other. She will be missed by many. She is preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Iona Stephens, and her brother, Darrell Stephens. Carla is survived by her husband, Larry Wilkerson of the home; two sisters, Judy Wilkerson (Dickie), and Veleta Groll. Her children Robert Wilkerson (Melodie), Kristen Townsend, Todd Wilkerson (Darnell), Amy Garner (Kevin). Grandchildren, Cassi, Justin, Travis, Kaycee, Hayden, Zayne, Hanna, Ethan, Harlee, Daxton and Gavin. Great grandchildren, Ty, Oakleigh, Tanner and Thea, and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to Coon Memorial Home Health & Hospice, The Preston Ralston Scholarship Fund, or your favorite charity.
