We mournfully announce the passing of Betty Steele, 97, of Dalhart, Texas. Betty passed away on March 28, after a short Illness. She is now in her heavenly home in the arms of the Lord. Betty, was born in 1925 in Dalhart to Mable and Benjamin Steele. Her mother was a homemaker and her father worked for the Chicago, Rock Island Railroad before retirement. She lived in Dalhart all her life which included the Dust Bowl years and she had many stories of those times. Betty enjoyed sports, reading and music. Early in her life she enjoyed tennis, snow skiing and later golf. Singing was one of her earliest and lifelong passions. During World War II, she and two other ladies had a trio called the Three Bs and sang frequently at the Dalhart airbase and other venues in the area. She was also a member of the Dalhart Choral Club. Betty was a faithful lifelong member of The First Baptist Church in Dalhart. She served as a young womens Sunday School teacher for many years. She sang in Dalharts First Baptist Church choir and was a frequent soloist. She graduated from Dalhart High School in 1943 and attended Texas Tech University and The University of Colorado Boulder. In her Senior year at Dalhart High School Betty was selected as the most beautiful and popular girl and was valedictorian. At Texas Tech she was Freshman Class Queen. After college she returned to Dalhart. Betty began her career in 1949, first as deputy clerk then later as the acting County District Clerk for several decades. She retired in 1989 after 40 years service to Dallam County. Betty was Clerk of the Year in 1984-1985 for The County and District Clerk Association of Texas. When Betty retired, she devoted her time to her friends and passions of reading, golf and travel, often travelling with a close cousin. While Betty never married, she lived a full and vibrant life with many friends. Betty was outgoing, friendly and confident all her life. Throughout her life she chose to spread positivity, love and kindness with the Dalhart community. Her positive attitude and smile is one of the first things everyone remembers about Betty. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother Paul, and her long time closest friend, Jack Johnson. She is survived by a nephew, James D Steele of Dawsonville, Ga; niece, Shirley J Steele Brown of Port Hueneme, Ca and L. Dewayne Dick of Bartlesville, Ok. No Services will be held.
