Betty June Kelly McMeen, 95, of Dalhart, died January 10, 2020 Services were at 1:30, Monday, January 13 at First Christian Church of Dalhart with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery, Dalhart, Texas. Betty June was born on the family ranch at Obar, New Mexico, on May 3, 1924. She was the daughter of James T. and Bettie (Sears) Kelly and was the next to youngest of 11 children, all of whom preceded her in death. Betty June Kelly graduated from Nara Visa, New Mexico schools and attended Eastern New Mexico University in Portales. When World War II left a critical vacancy in the rural school in Nara Visa, her father called her to become the teacher. She found that teaching was not her passion and she answered the call from the State governor to travel with other young professional women to serve her country in the offices in Washington D. C. She was assigned to the Pentagon at Marine headquarters. When the war ended she returned to Dalhart to find employment and ironically she found a young Marine who had just returned home from war and on January 26th, 1947, she married Jack Henry McMeen who was a Dalhart native. Betty June used her skills, learned no doubt during the dustbowl and depression years, to be frugal and resourceful and served her family and friends well with her ability to sew anything and cook the most wonderful pecan pies and meals. Her hobby of sewing and needle work created many works of art. She also worked as the secretary for First Christian Church and the Hartley County Precinct office, and extensively volunteered for her children and grandchildrens activities in church, school and community. Her happiest moments were spent worshipping with her church family at First Christian Church until her health prevented her from spending time with them in person. She valued education and was a scholar of religious and historical literature. Her family remembers well that her mantra was cheerfulness is the environment under which all things grow." Her life will be remembered for the cheerfulness and joy that she always exhibited. She is survived by husband Jack McMeen of the home, daughter Beverly Kelly and husband Tom Benton of Borger, and son Patrick Neal McMeen and wife Dolly of Amarillo. Three granddaughters and their families include Meredith McMeen of Edmond, Oklahoma; Amanda and husband Justin McKasson and children Nichole, Vincent and Chris of Shawnee Oklahoma, and Karon and husband Scott Potter and children Karson and Rexton of Edmond, Oklahoma. While it might take a village to raise a child, it also takes a village to love and care for those of advancing age. To each friend, neighbor and care-giver the family extends a heartfelt thank you for your devotion to Betty June. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations to your favorite charity and wishes for the gift to be received with great joy to bless others.
