Awanda Morris, 85, died Friday, September 16, 2011 in Dalhart, TX.A Memorial Service was held at 1:30 pm, Friday September 23, 2011 at the Dalhart First Presbyterian Church. Officiatants were Rev. Cynthia Ballard, North Platte First Christian Church and Rev. Dave Smallegan, Dalhart First Presbyterian Church.Awanda Irene McGarvin Morris was born October 17, 1925 in Chickasha, Ok to Rolla Hubert and Irene (Norman) McGarvin. She spent her growing up time in Oklahoma and California. She attended Occidental College in Los Angeles and McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois. While in Illinois, she met Arthur Burr Morris from Fort Worth, Texas. They married in Fort Worth August 27, 1948. As a preachers wife in small, rural, county-seat towns most of their married life she lived in Memphis, Canadian, Dimmitt, McCamey and Dalhart, Texas. They also ministered in Bancroft and Walthill, Nebraska and Yellville, Arkansas. To supplement the preachers income, Awanda returned to college at Sul Ross while living McCamey to complete the necessary coursework for a Texas Teaching Certificate. She began teaching in McCamey and retired from that profession in Dalhart. In addition to being an active member of the First Presbyterian Church where she lived, in Dalhart she was also a member of Las Vijeras Study Club and Retired Teachers. She also participated in Presbytery work and activities as her health permitted.Her parents, a grandson John Arthur Ballard, and her husband Burr preceded her in death.She is survived by her children, Cindy (Roy) Ballard of North Platte, Nebraska and Art (Sherry) Morris of Amarillo and his daughter, Valarie Morris of Houston.Donations in lieu of followers may be made to the Childrens Home of Amarillo, The Dalhart First Presbyterian Church, or The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
