He graduated from Price Memorial College in Amarillo, TX and attended Regis in Denver, CO and Draughon Business College in Wichita Falls, TX. August met the love of his life, Cheniel Hawkins in the summer of 1938. They were married on October 7, 1938 and were married 65 years. They had five children. August entered the Navy in 1945. He was a Seaman Second Class and was stationed in Guam where he worked as a Chemical Warehouse Man. He worked alongside his father at Ely-Hesse Wholesale Grocery, 200 Laundry and Dalhart Insurance. In the early 1960s August went into farming and farmed until 1998. He had a love for all animals and had many pets throughout the years. August enjoyed raising Shetland ponies, animals, photography, kids and his family. He was active in leading the boy scouts and was a life long member of St. Anthonys Catholic Church.
