Albert Lewis Cody, better known as A. L., 86, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, with his family by his side, on Sunday, November 26, 2023. Funeral Services will be held at the First Baptist Church, Wednesday, November 29, 2023, 2:00 p.m. with Pastors Kurtis Abla and Michael Wilcox officiating. Following the services, interment will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, November 28 from 2-8:00 p.m. at the Horizon Funeral Home.
A.L. was born in Earth, Texas on October 1, 1937, at the home of his parents, five miles northwest of Earth. He was the second child born to Carl and Lela Cody. A.L. graduated from Earth Senior High School in 1957. Shortly after graduating high school, A.L. enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Korea.
A.L. met the girl of his dreams, Peggie Nell Clayton in October of 1958, on a blind date. They corresponded by mail for a short period, ending their letters with "Be a dream for me!". He married Peggie on June 20, 1959. They had a wonderful life together, enjoying 54 full years before Peggie went home to her Lord and Savior. A.L. and Peggie were blessed with 3 children- David Charles, Tommy Dewayne and Elizabeth Kay.
A.L. and Peggie started their married life residing in Tacoma, Washington, moving to Dalhart, Texas in October of 1959, after A.L. was honorably discharged from the Army. He lived in Dalhart since that time, with the exception of a year when they lived in Amarillo, Tx. A.L. worked various jobs, including some time doing farm work. A.L. and Peggie owned the Dalhart Abstract until selling the business in October of 1991 and retiring. While working, A.L. was an active member of the Dalhart Lions' Club. A.L. was also a volunteer Little League and Little Dribblers coach.
After retiring, Peggie and A.L. enjoyed traveling and playing golf at many courses across the states. A.L. was an avid golfer and even had 2 hole-in-ones, both at the former Dalhart Country Club, hole 5 and hole 11, witnessed first by his sons and later by his golfing buddies! He had the pleasure of attending the Master's twice, even playing on the Master's course once with his son, Tommy.
A.L. was raised in a Christian family and asked Jesus into his heart at the age of 12. A.L. has been a member of First Baptist Church, Dalhart, Tx. since moving to Dalhart. He has been a member of the Baptist Men's Brotherhood and served as a Sunday School teacher to 12-year-old boys. A.L. has been an usher, greeter, and served on various other church committees. Everyone knew the back-left pew was his!
A.L. loved his Peggie, his children and grandchildren and was especially proud of his great grandchildren.
A.L. took comfort knowing his children and grandchildren had accepted Jesus as their Savior.
A.L. was proceeded in death by his parents, Carl and Lela Cody, a sister, Lorraine, and a brother Fillmore and the love of his life, his wife, Peggie Nell.
A.L. is survived by his son, David Cody and wife, Diane, of Dalhart, Texas; son, Tommy Cody and wife, Ann, of Allen, Texas; and daughter, Kay Cover of Dalhart, Texas; 8 grandchildren, Clint Cody, Amarillo, Tx.; Chrystal Cover, Dalhart, Tx.; Chelsea Cody Sage and husband Austin, of Texline, Tx.; Jennifer Cover Lenz and husband Jeremy, Dalhart, Tx.; Cody Cover, Dalhart, Tx.; Kasey Cover, Hartley, Tx.; Alyssa Cody, Dayton, Ohio; and Trey Cody, Dallas, Tx.; and 8 great grandchildren, Kambry Lenz, Brennan Sage, Payton Cover, Bristol Sage, Korbin Lenz, Blaine Cover-Wheeler, Autumn Cover, and Savana Cover-Chism; a sister Betty Packard, Amarillo, nieces and nephews and many loving friends and family.
