Roy Suddarth “Sudds”

March 14, 1941 - June 20, 2025

Roy Suddarth, beloved community member, craftsman, and storyteller, passed away on June 20,2025 at the age of 84. Born and raised in Dalhart, Texas, Roy graduated from Dalhart High School in 1959 before going on to earn his degree in English from Panhandle State University in 1964. He was not only a scholar, but also a gifted athlete, a collegiate star in both track and football.

You could often find Roy in his signature blue jean overalls, piddling around his chicken farm, always building something new. He was a master with his hands, creating and remodeling buildings from the ground up-and never one to sit still for long.

Roy was a man of many passions. He loved raising and spoiling his chickens, reading history books, collecting antiques and listening to classic country music. He never owned a television, preferring the richness of books, conversation, and the occasional well-played game of pool. A true wordsmith at heart, Roy could recite poetry from memory, delivering each line with perfect timing.

He was also the heart and soul of The Oakroom, the local bar he owned and operated for over 50 plus years where just like in the show Cheers, everybody knew your name. It wasn't just a place to grab a drink; it was a place to feel at home, thanks to Roy's charm, wit, and welcoming spirit.

Roy is survived by his loving wife, Judy; his daughter, Alison Rogers and her husband Charles, along with their two children, Blake and Emily; and his daughter-in-law, Stephanie Suddarth, wife of his late son Troy Suddarth, and their daughter, Tory.

He is also survived by his brother, Robert Suddarth and wife Jean, and their daughters, Sharla and Jennifer.

Roy was a proud stepfather and grandfather through his marriage to Judy. He is survived by Brooke Winings and her husband Khris, and their children: Kyler and his wife Sydney and their baby daughter Kallahan, Kade, and Emmi-Claire Winings; and Lindsey French and her husband Skeeter, and their children: Gentry Durham and her husband Jonathan and their son Hayes, Gracee French, and Will French.

A special acknowledgment is extended to Donny McWhirter, Roy’s brother-in-law, dear friend, and devoted caretaker. Donny was a constant source of strength, comfort, and compassion during Roy’s illness, and his presence brought great peace to Roy and the entire family.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Sr. and Bertha Suddarth; his beloved son, Troy Suddarth; and his grandson, Clayton Rogers.

Roy's life was a testament to simplicity, hard work, and genuine connection. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date to celebrate Roy’s life.
