In Loving Memory of Rex Charles Mitchell
January 26, 1951 – June 24, 2025
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Rex Charles Mitchell, age 74, of Amarillo, Texas. Rex departed this life peacefully on June 24, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on January 26, 1951, in Dalhart, Texas, to George and Irma Joe (Hesse) Mitchell, Rex grew up amid the open plains and close-knit community of Dalhart. He attended local schools, laying the foundation for a life defined by hard work, dedication, and a deep love for family.
Rex built his career in water well service, earning a reputation for reliability and expertise. After his well-earned retirement, he found joy in tinkering with metal and wood, always striving for perfection in whatever he created. Whether repairing, building, or simply exploring new ideas, Rex’s hands were never idle, and his craftsmanship was a source of pride.
In matters of the heart, Rex found enduring happiness with Rosa Loyd Cooper. After four years of courtship, they married in Las Vegas on September 18, 1992, embarking on a loving partnership of 32 years. Together, they shared a passion for adventure, often setting out on road trips to discover new places and create cherished memories.
Above all, Rex’s greatest devotion was to his family. He was a loving and supportive husband to Rosa, and together they raised six sons—two sons, James and wife Barb and Daniel Mitchell, and four stepsons, Eddie, Lonnie, Timithy, and Michael Cooper. Rex’s unconditional love extended to his fifteen grandchildren, whose lives he touched with warmth and wisdom.
Rex is survived by his beloved wife, Rosa; his six boys; fifteen grandchildren; his sister, Cari Stanley of Dalhart; his brothers, Clay Mitchell of Lubbock, and Wade and Ward Mitchell of Pampa. He is also remembered by his sisters-in-law, Linda Olivas and Faye Dowdell (and husband Ray), all of Elk City, Oklahoma, as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Irma Joe Mitchell; his brothers, Dennis Mitchell and Grant Mitchell; his sister, Eden Green; his brothers-in-law, Bill Green, Everett Stanley, and Manuel Olivas; and his nephew, Chase Mitchell.
A graveside service in honor of Rex’s life will be held at the Mitchell Family Cemetery on County Road 34, Hartley County, at 1:00 p.m. on July 3, 2025.
Rex Charles Mitchell leaves behind a legacy of love, perseverance, and craftsmanship. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him and remembered always for his unwavering devotion to his family and the many lives he enriched.
May his memory be a blessing.
