Leroy Smallwood

Leroy Smallwood, 91, of Dalhart, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, September 10, 2025. He was born on December 30, 1933, in Matador, Texas, to Albert and Rilda Smallwood.

On April 27, 1952, Leroy married the love of his life, Jean Beeman, in Tucumcari, New Mexico. Accompanied by friends LaFaun Rankin and Jack Ward, the couple crossed state lines to marry, beginning what became a remarkable journey of 73 years together.

Leroy is survived by his devoted wife, Jean; his son, Danny, and wife, Yolanda; grandchildren, Jordan Smallwood and wife, Lacye, of Dalhart, and Danna Metcalf and husband, Barry, of Fort Worth; and four great-grandchildren, Maegyn, Milam, Maebry, and Miles of Dalhart. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Harold and Jerry.

Over the years, Leroy worked in ranching and farming throughout the Hartley and Dalhart areas. He later served as Maintenance Supervisor for Dalhart Schools before opening his own boot and shoe repair business. Leroy found great satisfaction in his craft, repairing boots and shoes until arthritis in his hands forced him to step away.

A devoted husband, Leroy lovingly cared for Jean at home for many years and continued to visit her faithfully after she moved to Coon Memorial Nursing Home, never missing his weekly laundry run. He was a member of the Grand Masonic Lodge and the Chapel Class at First Baptist Church. In his younger years, he enjoyed fishing trips with friends and family, building memories that were cherished for decades.

Leroy will be remembered for his quick wit, his generous heart, and his steadfast love for his family. His humor, kindness, and faith left an impression on all who knew him.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, September 15, 2025, at First Baptist Church of Dalhart, 1000 East 16th Street, with Pastor Michael Wilcox officiating and Brother Kurtis Abla assisting. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.
