Jimmie "Jim" Richardson

Jimmie "Jim" Richardson, age 90, of Dalhart, passed away, Sunday, September 27, 2026. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 30, 2026 at the First Baptist Church in Dalhart with Pastor Michael Wilcox officiating. Interment will follow at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Dalhart. A family visitation will be 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 29, 2026 at Dalhart Funeral Home. Arrangements are entrusted with Dalhart Funeral Home.

He will be remembered for his deep love of the Lord, his devotion to his family, his passion for raising and training racehorses, and his remarkable knowledge of the history of Dalhart, Texas. Jim was born on July 8, 1936, in Lockney, Texas, to Vasel Calloway Richardson and Ada Lee Hays Richardson. In 1950, his family moved to Dalhart, Texas, where he attended Dalhart High School. During his high school years, he played football and basketball for the Golden Wolves, beginning a lifelong connection to the community he would always call home. Following high school, Jim joined the United States Navy, where he proudly served for four years. While stationed in Memphis, Tennessee, he met the love of his life, Mary Jean Eaves.

The two were married in 1956 and began building their life together. Their first child, Carol, was born while they were living in Memphis. The family later moved to Toms River, New Jersey, where Jim completed his naval enlistment.

In 1960, Jim and Mary Jean returned to Dalhart, where he worked at Gooch's Feed Mill until

1967. That year, the family moved to Arkansas for two years, where their son, Jimmy, was born. In 1970, they returned to Dalhart, beginning a new chapter that would lead Jim to one of his greatest passions. For more than 30 years, Jim raised and trained racehorses, dedicating himself to a profession he truly loved. His time with the horses was more than just a job; it was a passion that brought him years of enjoyment and fulfillment. After retiring from the horse-racing business, Jim began working for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, where he served for another 20 years. Above all, Jim's family was the center of his life. He took great pride in his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and especially enjoyed watching them participate in their various sports and activities. Their accomplishments and time spent together brought him tremendous joy. Jim also had a gift for conversation and a love for sharing stories. He possessed an incredible knowledge of Dalhart's history and could talk for hours with anyone willing to listen. Whether reminiscing about the past, sharing a story, or visiting with someone new, Jim had a way of making connections with the people around him. His stories, wisdom, and love for his community will be cherished by all who knew him. In his later years, Jim lived at Legacy Assisted Living for two years before moving to the Ussery-Roan Texas State Veterans Home in Amarillo, Texas, where he resided for the last year and a half of his life. We would also like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Legacy Assisted Living in Dalhart, Texas, and the Ussery-Roan Texas State Veterans Home in Amarillo, Texas, for the care, kindness, and compassion they showed Jim during his time with them. Your dedication and support brought comfort to Jim and his family, and we will always be grateful for the care you provided. Jim was preceded in death by his wife, May Richardson; parents, Vasel and Ada Richardson; and his sisters, Barbara Schaff, Joy Johnson, and Kay Moore.

He leaves behind a loving family who will forever treasure his memory: his daughter, Carol Reynolds, and her husband, Jeff, of Dalhart, Texas; his son, Jimmy Richardson, and his wife, Kelly, of Dalhart, Texas; and his sister, Donna Hall. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. His legacy continues through his five grandchildren: Josh Reynolds and his wife, Karlee, of Bushland, Texas; Kelli Reed and her husband, Jeff, of Clovis, New Mexico; Zach Richardson and his wife, Kristen, of Dalhart, Texas; Cody Byrd and his wife, Carly, of Arkansas; and Kyllie Ybarra and her husband, David, of Dalhart, Texas. Jim was blessed with 13 great-grandchildren: Colton Reynolds, Halle Reynolds, Cade Reynolds, Cager Reed, Bryce Vigil, Gatlin Richardson, Emberly Richardson, Lukas Ybarra, Aiden Ybarra, Cadence Byrd, Raiden Byrd, Bentley Byrd, Hunter Byrd, and Gentry Byrd. His family was his greatest treasure, and the love he shared with each generation will continue to live on. Jim's life was one of service, hard work, faith, and family. From his service in the Navy to his years working in Dalhart and his decades spent raising and training racehorses, he built a life filled with purpose and meaningful relationships. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories, stories, and lessons that will be passed down for generations.

Though he will be deeply missed, his family finds comfort in knowing that Jim is at peace and has gone home to be with the Lord he loved so dearly. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those fortunate enough to have known him.
