Jerry Keith Mitchell, born on May 14, 1948, to John and Edna Mitchell, passed away on December 11, 2025, in his home surrounded by family.

After high school, Jerry went to work for HWB Grocery where he became warehouse foreman and a co-owner of the business. Jerry always had a passion for farming and raising livestock and no matter where he was working, he always was involved in agriculture as well. Jerry retired from Premium Standard Farm as farm manager in 2008.

On January 20, 1968, Jerry married the love of his life, Becky Hesse Mitchell, and together they built an enduring marriage through good times and challenges rooted in faith, family, and hard work. For their entire life, Jerry and Becky made their home in Dalhart, where they devoted themselves to agriculture and to providing for the family they cherished.

Jerry was a member of St Anthony’s Catholic Church and served as an usher, with the Knights of Columbus, as well as the Parish Council.

Jerry will be remembered for his unwavering dedication, his steady presence, and the deep love he carried for his family. Jerry was a deeply faithful man who would do anything in his power to help another in need. He had more wisdom in his common sense approach to things than most people with college educations and a list of degrees. He often said “If something is worth doing, it’s worth doing right.” and “If you do it right the first time, you don’t have to do it a second time.” Most who knew him recognized his silent strength, both physically and emotionally. He was always willing to reach out a hand to help someone who wanted to learn or to improve their lot in life. His legacy is one of excellence and commitment: to his word, to the land he worked, to the people he loved, and to the life and family he built with Becky.

He is survived by His wife of almost 58 years, Becky Sue Mitchell (Hesse); 3 Children- his son Jody (Kim) Mitchell who resides in NC, his daughters Jamie Mitchell Gillispie, and Jocelyn Mitchell DeVilliers - 7 Grandchildren Victoria Mitchell, of Virginia Beach, VA, Alexandria Mitchell of Jacksonville FL, Mary Spencer Rumley of Lubbock, Savannah (Adam) Cage of Ft Collins CO, Houston DeVilliers, Asher DeVilliers, and Hatlee DeVilliers all of Dalhart. He is also survived by his brother Johnny Mitchell, and sister Betty Fletcher, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews who all looked up to Jerry as a source of stability and wisdom.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Edna Mitchell, his sister Bertha Blake, and brothers, Jimmy, Jackie, and Jerral, as well as his Parents-in-law August and Chenielle Hesse, sister-in-law Mary Lou Hesse, and Brother-in-law August Hesse III.

A vigil and rosary will be held at St Anthony of Padua Catholic Church on Sunday evening at 5:00pm. A funeral service to honor and celebrate Jerry’s life will be held on Monday, December 15, 2025, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Dalhart at 2:00pm with Deacon Mike Anzaldua officiating, with interment to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Mitchell will lie in state prior to services from 12:30pm until 1:30pm at the church on Monday. Arrangements are entrusted to Dalhart Funeral Home and Cremation Services. Friends, family, and loved ones are invited to gather in remembrance of a life well lived.
