Glenda Fay Shirley Whitehurst, a trailblazer, caretaker, and friend to nearly everyone she met, passed away on December 12, 2025, in Amarillo, Texas, at the age of 77. Please join the family in a visitation on Saturday, December 20, 2025 from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. at Dalhart Funeral Home. Arrangements have been left in the care of Dalhart Funeral Home.

Born March 22, 1948, in Dalhart, Texas, Glenda was an only child who somehow managed to create a family that stretched far beyond any boundary of blood or geography. She was married to Tom Whitehurst, who preceded her in death, and together they built a life anchored in resilience, humor, and a shared love of adventure.

Glenda logged over two million safe miles as one of the first female truck drivers for Walmart, beginning her career in 1991 and retiring in 2025—a remarkable achievement that speaks to her grit, professionalism, and quiet pioneering spirit. The road was her office, her classroom, and often her stage. Along it, she collected friends the way some collect souvenirs: Waffle House staff who knew her order, store clerks who knew her name, familiar faces at her favorite stops, and countless strangers who were strangers no longer after meeting her. She had a way of leaving people better than she found them—usually with a laugh included.

Her love of travel extended beyond highways. Glenda proudly held a private pilot license and shared a deep passion for aviation with her husband, Tom. Whether on the road or in the sky, she was most at home in motion, drawn to the freedom and perspective that travel—and flying—provided.

Though an only child herself, Glenda was the proud matriarch of a large and beautifully blended family, including eight children—biological and step—along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended relatives, and chosen family. Because her circle was vast and meaningful, the family has chosen not to list each member by name, knowing that love recognizes itself without roll call.

She shared especially deep friendships throughout her life, including her longtime best friend Sharon Mackey of Amarillo, whose bond with Glenda stood the test of miles and decades. In more recent months, Glenda was also lovingly supported by her caregiver, Terri, and granddaughter, Ashley, who both were trusted companions during her health journey.

Outside of the driver’s seat and cockpit, Glenda was a woman of many talents and passions. She never met a plant she couldn’t make flourish, had an instinctive eye for decorating her home beautifully, and possessed an undeniable love for shopping—whether for clothes, a gift for someone special, makeup, home décor, or the latest tech gadgets which she adored enthusiastically (even if she never quite mastered them). She loved dancing, a good joke, working in the yard, and spending time with friends, beloved pets, and family.

Above all, Glenda will be remembered for her quick wit, thoughtful heart, strong will, and unbeatable sense of humor. She was loving without pretense, generous without condition, and funny without trying. The miles were many, the skies were wide, and the marks she left behind are indelible.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gracie’s Project of Amarillo, TX.

She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who were lucky enough to share in her journey. With every mile we drive and every sky we cross, we know “Momma Glenda”—will be right there with us.
